How cool would it be if this was real and it was found to be some not-so-distant relative of homo sapiens? The moral and ethical questions on how to deal with/invade/exterminate/coexist/have as pets would be very interesting!
With the billions of people on Earth these days and modern transportation, nothing is really that big anymore. I can do the Oregon Trail in 2 1/2 days in my pickup. The few wild places left are being trampled by extreme recreationists and doctoral students and getting smaller each day. That is not to say there aren't undiscovered species out there, like insects and small mammals and cave spiders, but to find a large mammal these days would be extraordinary and in more news outlets than what we see here.
