Dumars did a sneaky good trade for Iverson to be "competitive" that was actually a disguised salary dump. That was his last good non-draft move Then he blew all that free money on Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon Which fortunately still made them horrible enough to draft Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight. Then they blew more money on Tayshaun Prince. Which again still kept them horrible enough to draft Andre Drummond. NOW they sign Josh Smith and Chauncey Billups.... which their luck probably has run out and this can FINALLY put them in the mediocrity treadmill which all the signings are designed to do, and keep them out the lottery for a while. Just so they can probably resign Rodney Stuckey after next season. Or maybe do like what they did with Ben Wallace and Billups and bring back Tayshaun again.
I don't understand the dislike for the Josh Smith move. He adds to their defensive identity, they are a big defensive team now with 4 defense first guys -- Drummond, Smith, Knight and KCP (the rookie). They'll have an awesome 3 bigs rotation with Drummond/Monroe/Smith. Smith will probably start at SF but he'll only be a SF "on paper". They can rotate their bigs for the most part, surround them with 3 shooters. Defensively, Smith is an awesome fit next to Monroe in particular. And offensively he may be flawed but on a team with Knight he'll have a ton of value as the secondary playmaker. The best part is that they still have assets and expirings to make a move for another guy. One more shooter at SF would make them very interesting. In terms of talent they are young, but they don't seem mediocre at all. I blame Dumars far less than most fans. You have to understand how much the ownership situation ****ed him up. However, regardless, I think he's turned it around nicely over the last few years. One more move, which he has assets to do, and they are dangerous.
