I love Bill Worrell, I really enjoy his commentary: a Rockets tradition, I will be sad when he retires.
in all other sports were Argentina is featured, Tennis, Soccer, even Golf, the commentators always say Argentine but like I said i can get over it unlike some of the other things i've hrd from play by play guys. I hrd the guy from OKC call yao a "Chinaman".
Bill Worrell is no where what Gene Peterson was in level of homerism. I agree Worrell has slowed down a little. The age is apparent this year . He's no where close to Milo Hamilton in that regard though. Worrell can still get it done. I think during the win streak last year he was as good as ever. Agreeing with the comments of how he was weak color analysts bringing him down. And how listening to other team's broadcasters makes you appreciate him more.
Clyde has corrected Bill a couple of times recently on some rules of the game and Bill has responded by "that's right Clyde." Clyde seems like he is getting sharper and v/v for Bill. But I still like Bill a lot.
Clyde Frazier isn't bad, but here's why I freaking hate listening to him: before every telecast, he picks up a webster dictionary and looks up at least 3 random obsolete words, and he promises himself to use them sometimes during the game.. If a webster isn't available, then it's from the SAT 1500 vocab words book..this drives me nuts. Why force in million dollar vocab words in a basketball telecast? being articulate and well-spoken is one thing, but being a show-off jerk is a totally different thing.. Bill Worrell is the best commentator in basketball.. the only one who might come close is Fitzgerald from the warriors (best known for his "PUT THAT IN YOUR FLAT TOP KIRILENKO!" after B-Diddy posterized him) I don't want an unbiased commentator, I just want someone who talks from a Rockets-fan perspective and offers good insight, knowledge, and humor..Worrell excels in all of the aforementioned things, and I don't know how I will watch Rockets games after he retires..
Bill is good at PBP, but he's having to do way too much color when paired with Clyde, who--despite his five-star "like clubbing a baby seal" quip-- usually adds as much content in his color commentary as you might find in the static between analogue radio channels. Matt Bullard is much better at color commentary. "Check the building for snipers" was a typical, spot-on, spontaneous stroke. It's the difference between listening to the great natural athlete vs. the guy who had to use his smarts to stay in the league.
The fact that we're having this discussion means it's hardly grounds to criticize someone for using "Argentinean", which isn't incorrect, even if it is more 'archaic'.
i have the same feeling. when we're on national tv, i sometimes tune to espn or tnt (have to in that case). unless jvg is on, i usually tune it back after a couple of minutes.
My brother in law and I have been talking about this lately. Worrell really says some stupid stuff and Clyde is down right awful. We joked about a drinking game where you would take a shot every time Clyde chuckled...then realized we would be dead before halftime. If he isn't chuckling at whatever is said he is just bragging about himself. Granted the guy is one of the greatest of all time but that doesn't mean he has to act all high and mighty all the time. In all fairness though I really really really hate most other announcers so in this case its not too bad. check my sig for my fave bill lines from the last few nights...
Its enjoyable to read this thread! Fans in all countries have some problem with their game commentators, this thread make me feel that I'm not alone.
Ok, I've heard this a couple of times now so I have to ask - Is this true? Like, has he admitted to doing this? Or is this just a myth and an assumption based on the fact that he does indeed use 'big' words. Oh, and Bill Worell is great. Too homeristic but still great. Agreed. Talk about nitpicking.
