Gene Elston was a favorite of mine, pre Milo.

Gene Elston was fantastic, very much of the Vin Scully school. You know the story of why Gene got fired and Milo took over?

Loel Passe was the cornpone ("now you chuck it in there!" on every strikeout, "hot diggidy dog and sasafrass tea!" on some other ****) guy before my time that my dad hated.

Milo was the first Astros radio PBP I remember.

Do you remember who the Oilers radio PBP was in the late 80s early 90s? Tom Franklin?

Why is there a part of me that believe Bill signs a contract with the Sixers?

The one thing that made their broadcast bearable. Guess it’s only fitting they have a bottom of the barrel broadcast to meet a bottom of the barrel team.

Bill was one of the best. I used to look forward to him and Calvin’s thoughts going into a new season. Bullard and Ackerman will be fine, they just pale in comparison to the guys down the road in Kalas and Blum.

i forgot about Milo. Probably since I don’t follow baseball much anymore, but I used to listen to him and Gene Elston as a kid. I was reading Worrell’s bio and he’ll, he was with ESPN around the time they got started.

Tom was there, but so was Jerry Trupiano. I can’t remember if John Breen was on the Oilers broadcasts or just the Sportsbeat talk shows with them. The glory years of sports talk in Houston. Lol.

A bit off-topic, but Elston and Passe were on this legendary broadcast :

Milo was doing radio and Elston TV on Mike Scott's '86 no-hitter. Elston simply says "There it is!" and then shuts up and lets the pictures and sounds do their job. Very Vin Scully. Meanwhile on the radio, Milo (given it's radio and you do have to paint the picture with words) jabbers like a schoolgirl. Story goes Milo went to the GM and told him to compare the calls and think which style the fans would like more. Elston gets fired, Milo takes his job.

I just posted this in the Mad Max voice thread:

Mike Gorman, Celtics’ PBP voice, was just elected to BBHoF ‘21, next class. This comment from him was quite interesting in the wake of BW’s retirement and the reaction of the minority,

“You find out early as a broadcaster, if the team was good, you’re probably looked on by people as being pretty good,” said Gorman. “If the team sucks, you suck, too.”

Bring back Bill Worrell you cowards!
And fire Ryan Hollins! (…Even though that’s CA’s spot … What? You like his fake enthusiasm, his constant UCLA references or constant “I played with _____.” references.)

JK, Bill doesn’t want to be part of this **** show organization. He left like everyone else before him. (Morey, Thaddeus, Mike, Harden…)

Who needs James Harden Kevin Porter Jr & Christian Wood?

Is that right? Gene was way better than Milo.
