one time last year, i dont remember what game, but there was just total sloppy play. like guys diving all over the floor and making bad passes, etc., and bill walton busts out and says "thats beautiful basketball folks!" i couldnt believe it. he is the biggest loser ever.

This typifies why some people love Bill and some hate him!

You see "bad passes" while I see "diving all over the floor". :)

Man Bill Walton is one stupid commentator, the only reason he was good was because he was taller than most players, if you put him in the league now when he was at his prime, he would do jack....also he smoked too much stuff back then, look at the way he talks now! And I noticed before that he disliked the Rockets...that's why we used to lose on National tv all the time and Bill would just bring them down even more!

I haven't posted in almost a year, and this drew me out of my lurking. Walton is terrible. I still will not accept his "love" for the Rockets, bc he was a serious hater during the first championship.

He's the John Madden of basketball...entertaining, but pointless.
It just depends if you like that kind of thing or not...

Kiki, John Madden is the best nfl commentator in the business. He is old and weird looking, but he truly enlightens the viewer on different aspects of the game of football. Walton does non of that! If you took a poll on who the best nfl commentators were and who the best nba commentators were there are two sure things that would come out of it: Madden would be voted best in the nfl, and Walton would not even be considered. Get your head out of your ass and actually listen to that babbling idiot! He can't even talk, he has a lisp! Come on people, Barkley is funny and Walton is a dumbass.

I am in total and utter shock. Speachless.........

When I saw this post, I thought whoever posted this one is going to be tourched. I then read the replies, eager to see the onslaught of Walton haters and to my suprise, to my dismay, there was actually glowing support for the fool. I have never in my life, never spoken to a single individual who liked a single quality Bill Walton posesses in regards to commentary. None. I was prepared to spew some serious venom about how horrible Walton is, but after reading all the support for him, I no longer have the heart. I believe I will simply crawl into bed, pull up the covers, and weep openly that the human race has slipped to level. Actual basketball fans supporting, no, hailing this troll as the best of all time is truly a sign the Appocalypse is upon us. I mourn for all of you.

"Where would the Clippers be without Sean Rooks?"

"What an outlet pass by Cato! Shades of Hakeem Olajuwon!"

"The only difference between Jason Collier and Hakeem Olajuwon is that Collier is left handed."

"Yao gets hammered and doesn't even retaliate! Everyone could learn a thing or two from Yao Ming."

Now come on people. If you think these quotes are not hilarious, you are hopeless. The man is a comedic genius. Some people just can't get it.

This is true. He was near a Rocket Basher during their run for two rings, then after we swept Orlando, he acted like Hakeem was his best friend. He used to comment on how he didn't respect Hakeem, and how everyone thought he used to play too rough... then they won and he acted like he gave birth to the guy. Now when he comments on the rockets, he acts like Him and Rudy and Hakeem go wayyyy back.

He is funny sometimes, and he is a breath of fresh air from some of the commentators... but a rocket fan will tell you he's a politician, always trying to say the right thing to the largest group of people... regardless of his beliefs. He's a "homer" of sorts.... a bandwagon jumper... He's an OK analyst, but I have no time for people that continually go back on everything they have said in the past just to look "right" now.

It's just sad to be this ignorant, especially if you're a Rocket's fan. In '86, when he could barely run, he still hurt us badly in the finals.

The guy had an instinctive understanding of the game and was the greatest passing center in history. That's why he's in so in awe of Yao.

If Yao had John Wooden teaching him the last four years he'd be mopping up Shaq now. Walton's greatness had nothing to do with his height.

As a broadcaster he can be annoying - but he does have a different view of the game. Sometimes his comments I think are indicative of someone's who's overcome a speech impediment.

He had to train himself to formulate a sentence in his head and has to deliver it quickly - but often it is because he's looking at what we're not.

Love him or hate him - he's not stupid or ignorant.

I like (Mr Hyperbole) Walton and find him to be quite entertaining - though it did take some years for me to come to that conclusion. Admittedly, when he falls in love with a particular player, the glowing prose does get a little old, however.

I think it was one of the first few games last year when Yao's potential was still being seriously questioned and he had a break-out game that Walton was announcing. I was amazed to hear how much Walton liked Yao (as opposed to Barkley etc.) He was gushing so much over Yao that it was almost embarassing, but still fun.

    I used to dislike Walton.

Now it's Dick Vitale (the walking advertisement for whoever is the NCAA flavor of the week).

I don't want to hear one more positive thing about that joke of a human Bill Walton. You people who are saying that he is stupid but funny, he isn't trying to be funny. His points are so stupid and obvious that it sounds like he's being sarcastic! Anyone who doesn't pick up on that and truly appreciates what he brings to the table, is a pawn of the media and should consider getting a better education. Face it, Walton is without a doubt a horrible horrible t.v. personality. Never praise his work again!

Bill Walton is not the best Sports commentator of all time. He isn't even close. All he does is ride the bandwagon of who is hot in the NBA. He has done that for years and years.....After watching the Cavs-Kings on opening night and listening to him, I am already tired of is snide 'Mr. know-it-all' persona. He was a tremendous player, but a terrible color commentator.

Howard Cosell was the best of all time.

The best around today is Al Michaels.

    Bill Walton!!!!! Are you joking?

Walton makes me want to turn my TV off and find a new hobby. He is the master of the wish-wash. Who ever is dominating at the moment is the greatest player ever. Then two minutes later they are the worst....

    its called irony, people.

its funny because he knows what he says isnt true. stop takin it so literally. do you really think he thinks chris dudley was the key to the knicks making it to the finals in '99? stop trying to take his 'analysis' seriously.

I thought I'd try to find some direction in this thread. So I tallied up all posts and divided them into 3 categories:

    Pro Walton (22)

    Hate Walton (43)

    Neutral (20)

I know they don't add up to all the posts in this thread, but whatever, that's the best (and the maximum effort) I was willing to do. Also, some numbers included multiple posts by the same poster.

I can now sleep at night, resting assured the whole world has not gone completely crazy embracing this embarassment to sports commentary.

    :D
