Walton is just flat out annoying. If I have to hear him say "THIS IS THE PLAYOFFS!" one more time this postseason I am going to kill myself ... Yes we all know its the playoffs Bill. Walton Likes big men and that is it ... period. He fantasizes every night about ten 7 footers on the court banging their bodies against each other playing "rough"
I think Bill Walton gets a bad rep. He definitely is entertaining and brings some no BS takes to a profession that is usually all BS. However, he allows his fondness for the big man obscure his views sometimes and he should be criticized for that.
How do you know he's joking? Has he ever mentioned that he was? His fellow commentators never laugh or acknowledge his jokes, they even have to correct him sometimes. Just because you think he's hilarious, that doesn't mean he's joking. There's laughing with him and then laughing at him. He said "Worst shot in Franchise history." Never mentioned anything about joking, his fellow commentator even said "well, it may not be the worst shot ever." Im not taking it as serious as you think, I just don't like the guy, I think he's annoying, thats my opinion. Until he says he's joking when he makes those comments, I think he's being serious.
previous poster is right- deadpan sarcasm is half his schtick and can be really funny sometimes. steve jones and walton were too much though. they would argue for minutes on end about some purposely inciteful comment by walton, even if the momentum of the game was changing or a spectacular play had just occured. one time i counted 9 consecutive possessions of walton-jones arguing- play by play guy couldnt get a word in edgewise.

Anyone who thinks Bill Walton is a good anouncer should be shot and burried. Are you people kidding me? He is the worst sports commentator in the nation! I'm not exaggerating, the guy says the most obvious comments in that horrible whiny tone. Whoever said he was biased towards the rockets obviously wasn't a fan 10 years ago when we won both championships. He was totally AGAINST us and was always blatantly rooting for the opposition. He's just a rockets fan now cause he likes saying "throw it down yao ming". That is seriously the only reason. He literally takes away from the game he is commentating on every time. Listen to the way Tolbert argues with him. He atleast provides the viewer with information and insight that is useful and original. Honestly, anyone who is pro Bill Walton just sucks at life period. Unbelievable!
Walton is a bumbling idiot. He is really clueless. Last night, in a game featuring a washed up Mutumbo and who ever for the Magic, Walton said the center position is the focal point of the offense. I dont know what game he was watching, cause the Magic deffinatly run the offense through TMac, and the Knicks were too busy laughing while Mutumbo was knocking over refs and picking up techs complaining about good calls. It is pure torture to listen to Walton. His comments are getting old because they are pointless. We all know he loves the center position because he was a great center, but come on, we don't see Sean Elliot idolizing the 3 or Kerr worshiping the Point. The only thing I still get a kick out of, is when he says "Throw it down big man". That never gets old. Mostly because he is an idiot. Also because centers never have flashy dunks, but he gets all worked up anyways. I'd like to see shaq pull a 360, Walton would sh*t his pants. Anyways, Walton is a horrible horrible commentator. I'm pretty sure they add him to the bill for the other commentators to make fun of, cause at least 10 times a game, they will somehow say, "Walton, what the hell are you talking about?"
Walton's whole point of being a commentator is to be funny and outrageous. At first I HATED him. Then as I began to listen to him more I started to laugh my ass off at the things he says, because he is so over the top. He makes the games very enjoyable to listen to. He is probably the best and funniest commentator I have ever heard. How can you not die laughing when he says about Yao "Yao Ming knows more about anything than anyone that has ever lived" classic.
we need commentators with useful analysis and interesting commentary. instead with walton you get incessant exaggeration and nonsensical garbage. he thinks he's a comedian. if we wanted a comedian to comment on and analyze the game, we would get chris rock.
He's the John Madden of basketball...entertaining, but pointless. It just depends if you like that kind of thing or not...
I can't stand Bill Walton!!!!!!!! whenever I'm watching the rox play and he's announcing, i have to mute the TV! Everytime the other team scores he makes an annoying comment like,"THAT WEAS HOOOOOOORIBLE PASS!"or "THAT'S THE WORST SHOT I'VE EVER SEEEEN!"Bill, just shut the hell up
