nahh, chalk squeaks sometimes, just not all the time.

Walton only grates on my nerves part of the time, other times, he says pretty funny stuff.

For instance (these are from memory, feel free to correct and/or add)

"Moochie Norris with the worst pass in the history of the Rockets organization"

(In perfect deadpan) "Kelvin Cato with the no look drop pass, now I've seen it all"

He is a punk...I would rather listen to crying babies then listen to his insight. I agree with the all-star player favoring. He will not get off Kobe's or Tim Duncan's nuts. Although...the favoring Houston thing I only started when Yao Ming arrived. He was just like every other media person in the past 12 years when it came to talking about the Rockets...even winning two championships in a row...we really did not get respect from the league. And his voice is annoying.

    Richard! PUT THE COOKIE DOWN!

Steve Jones has always been my favorite TV announcer. I liked him ever since his days when USA Network  was covering the NBA. moonnumack is right on, Walton was a good foil for Steve - they would be watching the same game and be of opposing opinions 99% of the time (and of course, Steve's made much more sense), but that made for good TV as long as you mentally prepared yourself that Walton was not there for any kind of serious basketball analysis.

But any Rox fans must put Gene Peterson as best announcer (there, now this topic is in right forum). Sure, he's not objective. He gives the other team little credit. He's unprofessional occasionally regarding NBA officiating. So??!! Noone puts a better image of the action in your mind, and when you listened to Gene and the Rockets won, you felt GREAT. You listen to Spurs radio or NBA League Pass, and it is my perception that the typical announcer is kinda pleased the team won, kinda excited when they hit a big basket, but he's got better things to do once the game's over. With Gene, it's live-and-die Rockets!! :D  :D

I miss listening to him. :(

    (edit)

    In Summary:

    Snapper = Best commentator
Geno = Best announcer (probably should have started new thread)
Walton = well, at least the Long Strange Trip is rather amusing

i remember last year in the playoffs, dont remember which teams, there was this one game where it was just constant dunks and in the next game of that series, walton was talking about the previous game and described it as a "throw-it-down-a-thon" game

after i heard that i laughed so hard that i fell in love with they guy

    :)

Bill Walton to me is one of the worst commentators of all time.

    1. The guy takes sides in every game, which is very annoying.
    2. He makes dumb-ass assumptions and comments: "Worst shot in Franchise History"- Who the hell is he to make that comment.
    3. Yes, he was a great player who probably knows a lot about basketball, but to always make comments on the spirit of the game gets annoying so fast.

Bill and Calvin are the best in the biz, period.

He is a drug-addled, kowtowing-to-superstars, aggravating, moron who talks about "the greatness" the "tenacity" and blah, blah, blah every ten seconds a game. I can't think of one time that Walton has amazed me with his knowledge of b-ball despite playing for the [cheating] Wizard of Westwood, who bought players as if it were no big deal but yet knew the game like no other (strange dichotomy there...cheater/master coach?).

God, Walton exasperates me just to listen to that annoying voice. Bill Walton the player, I liked. Bill Walton the commentator.....I utterly despise.

I don't know what kind of crack some of you are smoking, but Walton is terrible. During the Rockets Championship seasons this guy would NEVER give the Rockets any respect. After they won back-to-back, he jumped on the bandwagon. He also started including Olajuwon as one of the top 3 centers of all time AFTER they won it all. Oh, and if this guy doesn't think of something else to say besides, "Throw it down big man!" then I'm going to shoot myself. He would never make it as a Sportscenter anchor.

    1) Possible, I know I cared alot more then about the lack of Rockets coverage in the national media.

    2) Thats a fact, we may even get too much attention..(if thats possible)

    3) Amen brutha, me too. :D

anyone who believes that Chick Hearn isn't the best commentator needs to get their head checked, or go find an old laker tape. He made watching basketball (even Laker ball) exciting. RIP Chick

the bill walton-tom tolbert combo is perhaps the worst combo in history. i can hardly stand to watch the game when they do the talking. walton will say one thing, and 2 seconds later contradict what he just said. tolbert is just a dumb oaf. its horrible that they dont get their mouths stapled shut.

i thought it was a griffen attempted 3-pt shot from the baseline. i was watching that game (one of the few rox games on espn international last season), and found that line to be damn funny at the time, and close to the mark too!

You know, I'm biased, because I really like Walton. The hyperbole is funny. If you don't find it funny... at least recognize it for what it is.

But getting told of by John Thompson? Please. That guy's terrible. His view of the game is ridiculously one dimensional, he's inarticulate (horrifically), and gets exposed for his lack of factual knowledge consistently.

It was even more amusing when he worked with Danny Ainge, because Ainge would actually call him on his mistakes until lats year, when he was evidently under strict instructions to be more respectful.

Bill Walton during the Rockets-Spurs matchup, said that his son, Luke, was the luckiest person in the 2003 NBA Draft. Anybody know why he said that?

Why the hell are you taking this so seriously? He's JOKING people, KIDDING.

Good lord, and here I was, thinking it was refreshing to have a color analyst that knew how to kid around...but hell, some of you guys actually think he's serious. Maybe if some of you watched his Clipper games on LP, you'd have different opinions. He's hilarious.

The people who don't get the Bill Walton deadpan sarcasm are really missing out. In a league full of dry, boring, colorless color commentators, Walton is a breath of fresh air.

You miss listening to gene Peterson? Why? Did he retire? I have seen all the preseason games on TV this year, so have not had to listen to a game yet on the radio.. is Gene no longer calling the action? I hope that is not the case.. Gene is definitely one of the all time greats in sports radio game broadcasts.. if he is not doing the games anymore, that is absolutely a big bad loss.

Man... I miss Chick Hearn :(

Walton's fine though, I think. Like some of the posters pointed out, he has a vast basketball knowledge, but goes over the top on some comments. Quite an entertaining announcer if you can look past that :)
