It's probably been posted multiple times. I myself posted it long ago.
BTW, Bill Walton is my favorite, including JVG.

I love Bill. His crazy commentary is what makes some of the Clipper games almost watchable.

i met Walton a few years ago.

all i asked him was what he thought of the Rockets.
he wouldn't stop talking, and he was honest too, he was saying how we won't get far with JVG. that dude really really loves to talk about hoops.

    it was awesome!

Love Bill Walton. We can't have the same type of announcers every game. It gets boring that way. Imagine if every commentator was like Hubie Brown. Now I like Hubie Brown, he knows how to break down a play and analyze, but we always need to switch things up to keep it fresh.

The JVG, Mark Jackson, Breen combo is my fav. Marv Albert and Kevin Harlan are the best play-by-play guys now. I miss Bob Costas, he had a drama effect to everything. Gus Johnson would absolutely own. I could picture him calling the Spurs/Suns dbl OT game or T-Mac's 35sec miracle.

The hyperbole of the thread title matches perfectly w/ Walton's commentating style.

Walton is hillarious i met him a few times and he just talks basketball all the time. I talked to him more about UCLA ball and he would not stop at all. I have nothing but respect for that guy, ESPN needs to get him out of the studio and back doing games again.

it has developed his style of broadcasting that is love/hate with a lot of people. i remember before he got his consistent gig on NBC/ESPN doing national games he did color for the local clipper broadcasts. at the end of the season one year Bill said to Ralph for like a full 90 seconds what a pleasure it was, going into his usual hyperbole, being his partner for the past season.

all ralph said was "I wish the feeling was mutual"

ralph didnt care for bill's antics i remember a lot of times he used to cut bill off and there was a few times he told bill to be quiet. it was hillarious

Bill Walton is great. If you don't like Bill Walton, you don't have a sense of humor.

Steve A. is all right. I don't know why so many ppl don't like him. But he talks some funny ***** too.

Tom Hammond, Bill Walton, and Steve Jones were the best NBA commentating team ever.

Anyone who says they hate Bill Walton obviously didn't watch the 93-95 Rockets playoffs.

"Hakeem...the grace, the domination, the will to win"

He stroked Hak the whole time and I will always love him for that

You're nuts, he's amazing. I used to hate him too, but I just did not get him.

He turned me when he was commenting on a Raptors game once, and during halftime there is this 13 year old kid violinist totally into it as the halftime entertainment. I believe his name was Randy Fung. And Walton is going off about how rad this kid is, "the grace, the dexterity, the passion, the commitment of Randy Fung..." etc. etc. And he wont let it go; indeed the kid was good. But then he starts bashing the Raptors first half performance, comparing their lack of determination with Randy Fung, and how much better Randy Fung is than the Raptors during the highlights. "Look at them watching the shot instead of boxing out on the glass. Anyone who has ever seen Randy Fung would know that laziness is not the way to achieve success." The rest of the game, dropping that reference over and over and over - after a some amazing fast break, he'd say: "Shades of Randy Fung."

He gets how sports can transcend sports, that's why he is so rad. Love Walton.

Exactly. I used to hate Bill Walton. But lo and behold, after hearing him over and over, I started to get his schtick. I started to get that he uses extreme hyperbole and completely unrelated comparisons as a mockery. Just listen to his commentary on the second video there.
Comparing Shaq to a meteor and the Grand Canyon? He just so skillfully manipulated the absurd to mock both traditional sports exaggeration and pop culture. And the best thing is that he doesn't have an off button.

The third clip is my favorite. Yeah, his Boris Diaw commentary is great, but the third video I posted when he's talking about the Suns is amazing. He just goes and goes and goes, getting more and more ridiculous. It's like he just wants to see how far he can push things. He even sings in the end of it!

Ever since JVG called out Horry for that flop on Boozer he's been my favorite.
