Hey, at least he liked the arena:

"(My overall grade: B-plus. Second-best NBA arena that I've seen, other than the Staples Center, only the food options are vastly superior.)"

this is honestly one of the silliest things i've ever read. if you're in a town of 5 million people and you can't find something to do, the problem is you.

The Sheryl Crow Award for "Person, place or arena that could look good or not good depending on the light"
To the Toyota Center, which had many pluses (tons of food options, very spacious, cool scoreboard, stylish lighting for the games, center bars, spacious food areas for the club seat holders) and two major downsides:

    (1) It's in Houston.

    Ouch...well, reality is a b***h. :(
I am hoping to work in TI or other semiconductor companies in Texas. Not much chance, but worth a try just because of Yao. :)

are you telling me that houston is the hot vacation destination for travelers?? nope. there's not unique things to do that you couldn't do in your own town that makes you want to shell out cash to and waste some vacation days in houston.

I grew up in Houston as a kid. I liked it but I love Austin so much more and have a much greater appreciation for Austin than I do Houston. Houston is so flat. There's very little hills. It has huge crime problems, little scenery, and the air is so smoggy. I mean you could have just taken a shower, and walked out of the house and would feel dirty because of the air. I don't miss that. What I do miss is the diversity among cultures, the Houston Zoo, Museum, and most of all it's sports. I got league pass just for the Rockets and clutchfans for news articles, and a big fanbase to talk to so I don't feel like I'm missing much being an Austinite.

The ironic part being that Rockets fans who actually want a rabid game experience complain about the arena.

I like the fact that "Pnutt" had him waiting for tickets in the freezing cold. "I'll be right back Mr. Simmons, just wait here in the freezing Houston cold... "

    Bill got owned.

I think Mr. Pnutt's first name was "Deez."

As the great Paul Wall would say...

    Outta towners be comin' around
Runnin' they mouth and talkin' down
but you don't know nuthin' bout my town
either hold it down or move around

Anyways, I thought the article was pretty funny, much like Vecsey's articles: they're supposed to be entertaining and that's about it. I never take them too seriously.

That Isiah Thomas joke cracked me up though. :D

i'm not going to, but this b*stard sounds extremely racist saying that. if he doesn't like houston, fine, go home and don't come to houston ever again. hell, why should you. you don't really know jack squat about sports anyway, and rarely report on it. if you are going to have an opinion on something, know something about it first.

The "Black Superbowl" comment doesn't bother me considering that Simmons just got it from J.A. Adande, who happens to be black. And Michael Wilbon's been using the term "Black Thanksgiving" to refer to the All-Star game for a couple of years now. Seems like the Black community has really embraced the All-Star game as a major event in their circles.

In all honesty, Simmons has a point. I wasn't a huge fan growing up, an d pretty much everybody I know who has visited Houston, via work or whatever, unless they are from some crappy small town or a third world country, has uniformly not been impressed, to put it mildly. There are just not a lot of attractions for the casual visitor that are unique. Sure, the zoo is nice and the museums are great - but in the grand scheme, they're nothing special. As far as natural scenery we've got nothing to write home about. Plus the heavy suburbanization/sprawl makes it very difficult for out of towners to get around the city. It's not a bad place to live, but seriously, woudl you take a vacataion there given other options? I sure wouldn't (and I have, to visit family).

All those people who hate on Houston really don't get this city. And it's understandable, cause these writers don't live here. Houston is a great city... to live. To visit, though.... I can see why it wouldn't be at the top of anyone's list.

Wake me when Simmons has anything good to say about anyplace other than Boston, Vegas, or LA. At least he's not ripping the city apart like he did Jacksonville. As a bonus, he didn't really have anything concrete to point out. And it is true that this is more of a place to live in. I've always let people know there isn't much to do as a tourist here. It's just the plain truth.

Unfortunately, Simmons struggles to be funny if he isn't making snide shots at stuff/people.

At his book signing here, he was impressively open and talkative (at least when I was up). Even said his stance on Roger was softening.
