Hope the replies above confirmed what I mentioned. No one in their right mind would say Magic was even halfway decent as a studio analyst. (Trust me, I am one of those people that LOVES Magic. From the moment I started following Basketball, I was a Magic fan over any other player including MJ and Hakeem. I am as big a Magic fans as there is. Regardless, he was rubbish on tv as an analyst).

Anyway, take my word for it or the word of the others replying in kind.

Magic was terrible as a TV commentator, but J. Rose is worse, and the Simmons guy just makes me turn off the TV.

Magic is clueless. It baffles me how someone who was such a genius playing the game sounds like a heavily sedated concussion patient when hes talking about the game.

There's the key: I don't care about the salary cap. I don't play fantasy basketball. I don't care what the names of the owners are. I want to hear talk about the play on the court. Your post is focused on "the NBA": I am more interested in the game being broadcast on a given day.

lol, the show was about "the NBA." It's called "NBA Countdown." And man, if you really feel NBA GMs = owners and the salary cap is only relevant to "fantasy basketball" I can understand why you'd be so easily impressed with Magic's wealth of knowledge.

Regardless, those were two examples of basic NBA concepts Magic didn't know, not a description of the entire breadth of what was discussed. You seriously think Magic was any better at talking about the game? Anything besides "it's time for Kobe/LeBron/Duncan/CP3/JR Smith/Greg Stiemsma to TAKE OVER this game"? You think he ever acknowledged when teams were defending a player a certain way, hedging pick and rolls differently, playing with particular pace or efficiency, as Bill, Wilbon, and even freaking Jalen (admittedly damn near Magic Jr) were prone to mention on occasion?

Seriously? ...just admit you never watched the show.

I thought Magic was better as a color commentator rather than an in-studio analyst.

This is "taking TV way too seriously"? lol. Yeah, if I were in your shoes, and like you, revealed I didn't know much about what I was talking about in my previous post, I'd try to extricate myself from the conversation too. Can't blame ya.

Same here. He wasn't nearly as guarded and let a few non-pc things slip in here and there. Was much more entertaining.

Hey, in real life you wouldn't dare talk to me like this. And for what? Reppin' Bill Simmons! You need a slap.

Arguing with the Bill Simmons posse is like arguing with a Justin Bieber fan. It's a waste of time. Cool down, tough guy.

Repping Bill Simmons? Haha, more like accurately describing Magic's obviously lacking analyst skills.

"In real life you wouldn't dare talk to me like this." ROFL. Dude, you're too much. Maybe you take discussions on freaking internet message boards too seriously.

Simmons doesn't translate to television, and he's not much better at radio. His strength is writing, but his columns are too infrequent and usually too long. In a perfect world (but less profitable for him), he'd do nothing but write three medium length columns a week. If he focused on that, and only that, he could become one of the greats at his profession.

You are never going to convert me to a Bill Simmons fan, so I don't know what you are trying to prove.

Here's what we are going to do. You put me on your ignore list; I put you on my ignore list. You go back to your baseball card collection; I go back to the world of men. Goodbye.

Lol ok wow. I think you escalated that situation my dear fellow.

You made some points that came off silly and AstroRocket was able to show how your points were silly and now you're the one throwing insults his way. That's not polite. That's not how gentlemen behave.
Even though most would agree with the points made by AstroRocket in regard to what you wrote, all you had to do was "agree to disagree" and move on/along. Trying to insult him and asking to be put on ignore lists, etc seems to be a recourse when both sides refuse to be civil to each other. AstroRocket seemed to behaving civilly to you but maybe you know more than I do.

    NBA season starting soon...woohooo

Wait, "Convert you?" "baseball card collection?" "I go back to the world of men?" No, seriously... "I go back to the world of men???" You really just posted that last one? Literally LMAO. I'm dyin' here.

The fact that, in your mind, these words are in some way relevant to the discussion we had makes you too awesomely bizarre to ignore (sadly, the authoritative "Here's what we are going to do" was less than effective).

Farewell, strange random bbs traveler.

    Here's my take...

Of course BS can not compare to Magic, Clyde and a host of other former basketball players knowledge. Not even close, end of discussion. But where Simmons win and Magic and gang lose is that they rarely indulge fans with anything of any substance. They are all Jon Gruden's finding everything that anyone does fantastic and layer icing all over their commentary without any substance.

Simmons is great because however you feel about him, he does not substantially change for the cameras. He cuts through verbal diarrhea that is the majority of sports commentary and asks the questions and provides opinions that arent cherry coated.

Fair enough not liking his personality (I personally enjoy it) or television presence but at least he's not trying to preserve friendships or rub anyone the wrong way like I feel the majority of former NBA players do. They are comfortable living off their name without adding anything of any real value.

Read back further up the thread to see who's civil.

I'm looking for people to ignore: the board is getting full of trash. My points aren't silly to me, and I'll be glad to go into an ignore-marriage with you too if you like. Let's do it.

Hey Bill Simmons fans, go rep your boy:

Just what I don't want from Bill Simmons: analysis not of how good players are, but how fun players are to watch.

I prefer Bill Simmons over Magic any day -- and that's saying a lot, because I'm not crazy about Bill Simmons. I love, love, love, love, love, love, love Jalen, but not necessarily as a commentator. He's at his best just shooting the ish about basketball in his podcasts with Jacoby. I can't think of another former NBA player who is as real and honest as he is, and he seems like a genuinely good guy. Hilarious stories, too.

Not sure if this has been followed up (here or elsewhere) yet but Steele is joining Countdown.
