I'll wait to get excited. I remember when Kubiak was hired and the reports were out that he was going to hire all these people. There was talk about Jim Bates (wanted him bad) as the DC and then it was Rod Marinelli. We ended up with a buddy system of scrub DCs.
I don't care how coveted the San Fran coach is, I'm very wary of pairing a first time d-coordinator with a first time pro head coach after going through Richard Smith and Frank Bush. I don't know who is out there as a proven guy other than Leslie Frazier off of the top of my head.
Don't know how thread worthy this is but will let someone move it if they want. It appears he could have been happy at Penn had things been different. I for one am glad he decided to move on and come to us. http://msn.foxsports.com/college-fo...-weary-of-paterno-people-at-penn-state-010114
He's been coaching for awhile, he's been a head coach as well. It will be the first time he's had control of just the defense, but he's ran teams before. He just happens to be very well entrenched with San Fran. It would be a hell of a steal.
Kubiak was a bad hire to begin with. His final year in Denver he was stripped of play calling duties because the team couldn't score in the Red Zone. Mike Shanahan ran everything. It was a true dice roll on Kubiak being successful. O'Brien is an offensive guy who worked under a defensive head coach in Bill Belichick which more than likely meant he had more input to how the offense was run and offensive player development and the Patriots were all about defense and field goals until they got busted with spy gate and they became a prolific offense under O'Brien. Tomsula is a defensive guy coaching under an offensive minded head coach and the D-Line (and or front 7) is the most important group on the defense because if you can't get to the QB and stop the run it doesn't matter who you got in the secondary and San Francisco's corners aren't much better than Joseph and Jackson. His player development is proven and he the Texans may not get to get him because he may get a head coaching job...
I would be happy with Romeo as well. I believe he put alot of that defense together in KC. And has been in some bad head coaching situations... Always had garbage QBs...
Man, we go from the two calmest good ol'boys, to Obrien and Romeo the bulldog and pitbull of the NFL. I love it. what a contrast.
I would rather trade down and get Barr or Mack and get more picks instead of drafting Clowney with the overall #1 pick. And Barr may be the best player in this draft period...
@JaysonBraddock Loooong shot, but the coach from NE that Bill O'Brien will probably want but not get is Dante Scarnecchia - NE's OL coach since 2000. Pepper Johnson - Coached up Vince Wilford & Pats D-line from '04-'11, now Pats' LB coach. #Texans Tim Banks - Current Illinois DC. Was the LBs & DBs coach for Ralph Friedgen from '03-'06. #Texans Brian Flores - Current safeties coach for NE. Was an assistant coach for O'Brien's offense / special teams. #Texans Chad O'Shea - Replaced O'Brien as WR coach in NE in '09 when Bill was promoted. Played QB at U of H & from Houston. #Texans Ted Roof - Hired O'Brien as OC/QB coach at Duke, was DC for O'Brien in '12 at Penn State, before going back to Ga Tech as DC. #Texans Several coaches to watch for joining O'Brien in Houston: George Godsey - played QB at Ga Tech for O'Brien & hired him as Off Asst in NE...
McClain: Doesn't know the coaching staff or who might come. Big QB with some maneuverability. But he also had McGloin (who was 6'1). He's flexible. Doesn't force players to play his style if they can't. O'Brien with final say? Gary and Rick worked great together. I have no idea, don't know what's in the contract. OB could have gone anywhere so he got everything he wanted. ... Rick is scouting all these QBs. JFF, that kid was magnificent. The next 4 months, we'll see them bunched up at the top. You have to worry about the teams behind Houston. Manziel off the field? What did he do really? He hasn't gotten in trouble here. He'll go to the combine, they'll ask him about everything. Matthews and Evans will be asked. They'll see he's passionate, players respect him, leadership is good but he's not OB's pocket QB but maybe Bill will say "Man, I'd like to mold him." Think Patriots offense: multiple TEs, some FB, run the ball, man and zone blocking, the QB, think Brady and Mallett. Bigger pocket QBs. We haven't seen anyone like Manziel since Vick. The fact he has improved so much this year, maybe he'll think his talent is extraordinary, I want to work with him. You have to make good decisions. They say he's a good QB coach. They said that's his specialty. (More on Manziel) It's the things he's been doing all along. His thumb was so injured it was pointing this way and a shoulder injury. They have 4 months to watch him in shorts and a tee shirt and that stock will rise. RT on the roster? If so, he was on IR. (Brennan Williams). You have 4 draft choices on IR.
This is a coaches QB? <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Y-Lj1y52nxQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Plus I don't know about comparing Manziel to Vick. Michael Vick was a once in a lifetime athlete with a rocket arm and quickness to get around anyone coming out of college. Manziel would be lucky to be compared to half what Vick did in college. Of course his pro career turned for the worse and we all know how that ended. I honestly think McClain has no idea what's going on and is hoping we draft Manziel so he finally has something entertaining to write about.
