Yeah, I don't get the Woody Allen thing, either. His characters and actions seem more like he should be in a psychiatric ward. With Bill Murray, I can at least chuckle at times, but with Woody Allen it's like "somebody tell me when I'm supposed to be laughing".

He plays every role in the same manner. Murray is the keanu reeves of comedy, only more sarcastic. I think he has just been blessed with great screenplays.

OK, for all you people who are saying that (1) Woody Allen only does intellectual comedies and (2) his movies are worthless, please tell me what movies you have seen from him. Because #1 is completely wrong if you've watched anything pre-1975 and #2 is ridiculous if you've ever seen Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, or Sleeper.

Please, if you're going to criticize, then list the Woody Allen movies you've seen.

Great post! Heck, I'm a huge fan of Murray and several others mentioned here, especially my favorite, Peter Sellers, but like you, I have to think some of these folks have missed Allen's early work. How can you not laugh like a loon at gigantic boobs rolling over a hill, coming right at you? All the earlier films you mentioned are true classics of the genre.

    Kudos for posting the obvious!

For better or worse, it appears most contemporary romantic and observational comedy stems from Woody Allen. But that has more to do with his directing and producing than his acting.

Bananas, Take The Money and Run, Play it Again Sam, and Sleeper are four of the goofiest, most slapstick movies ever made. How anyone can say Woody Allen only made intellectual movies (the "blanket statement") obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. Now, the other comment about his movies aren't "worth a flip," I'd be curious to know which comedies said poster feels are "worth a flip." No doubt I'd expect Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Ace Ventura, and The Nutty Professor to be up there (all of which I enjoy). Say you don't like someone's style, but to say they're not worth anything? Silly.
