Funny thing is that Murray hates it when directors just want him to improvise. Thats why he loves Wes Anderson, because Anderson is very meticulous about his scripts. Everything Murray says in an Anderson flick is scripted.

Murray reminds me of Steve Martin in that they both work on very many levels. Slap stick, physical comedy, intellectual comedy, and they have both done well in dramatic roles as well.

I think the reason many people don't like Woody Allen movies is because Allen ONLY does intellectual comedies, and those aren't for everyone. I think he's brilliant on that level, but sadly 1-dimensional.

I agree with Eddie Murphy being #10. His standup is great, he's had a few gems in the movies, but overall, his movies are all the same character.

Richard Pryor on the other hand was great in standup and in all of his movies. He really showed some depth in a few movies, but he should've shown his dramatic side some more. In Bustin' Loose and The Toy, he really shined, showing a comedic and dramatic side that really made you care about the character. Very underated as an actor in my opinion.

The scene in Lost in Translation where he's shooting the commercial is hilarious. They keep doing takes and they never like how he says the line.

He is just such a great actor.

so great. amazing in rushmore and caddyshack in particular, i think. his frustration with his twin sons in rushmore is so subtle and so awesome.

I didn't list Rushmore or Lost In Translation because they were more dramatic roles for him. I love both of those movies, though.

I guess I should have named the thread something different. I didn't mean I think he's the best actor (although his dramatic acting skills are vastly underrated), just the funniest.

He wasn't overtly funny in Rushmore or Lost In Translation. It was more understated, but not on par with Stripes, Ghostbusters, etc.

    Amen.

Couldn't agree more with Woody Allen. Nothing is humorous about anything he does. Sometimes I think people just applaud things they don't get as "pure genius" much like the crap that David Lynch spews out. Kinda like the emporers new clothes.

I never thought Murray was that funny from what I recall, but then I never thought Caddyshack was funny, either. Ah well, different strokes for different folks. :D

when you build off someone else. . . it is hard to say you are ahead of them

    Murphy will NEVER surprise Pryor!

I guess I must have truly missed the genius that is Peter Sellers
beyond the pink panther i have no idea what he has done
    and
the pink panther was not that funny

    John Cleese is greatness.

I love Bill Murray's work in the movies ima listed. Kingpin is an underrated movie for sure.

    I like Paul Rudd personally.

    He's just funny.

I don't think I've seen somebody on this board who had worse taste in movies than you.

    No offense.

    He's definitely top 3.

Only one I might consider funnier onscreen would be Jim Carrey.
