i saw it this past saturday...if you are an atheist/agnostic you will laugh, if you are religious, you'll probably leave lol
I saw this movie a couple of days ago with my girlfriend. I thought it was pretty good. Though, I can see where it gets stale, with Maher's seemingly senseless jabs at religion. Some are somewhat funny, some just aren't. I don't really think it was a KO punch to religion at all. More though to fanatics. It made me a little nervous knowing there are some people who wont talk to you diplomatically because you may have different beliefs or question ones God. With that being said, without the Athiest/Agnostic/Non-believer goggles on, it was pretty piss poor. I mean, you really have to love Maher and Religious bashing to get into it. With that being said, my girlfriend was terrified at the ending of it. I told her I more then half expect that to happen.
I find this to be true, as well...I agree. Unfortunately it's both sides of this issue and both sides of lots of other issues as well.

Plus how can you pick out individual things that you choose to believe in Religion. If a few things in the bible you think are preposterous, what reason is there that maybe the BIG thing you believe in are preposterous as well? I went to a Christian university, 4 years of chapel, christian scriptures, christian heritage...and even with all that exposure.. a rational level headed person cannot believe this unless they were brought up with it from childhood are a drug addict needing a reason to be "saved"
Yep, I realize that also. I use to be one of the unrulely types, into common sense and my inner Libra kicked in.
awesome...i love jesus.....and when i mistreat people i find i couldn't be further from that. God isn't for this group of people and against that group of people. He's for humanity. He loves abundantly...and in the story of Christ demonstrates that by serving and ultimatlely dying for it. I believe He asks me (and all of us) to see humanity in that way, as well...to serve other people and make my life less about me....and in that way, be an agent of change for the whole world. That's as close as you'll get to pegging me down to what I'd call, "religion." James 1:26-27 (The Message translation) Anyone who sets himself up as "religious" by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
I just saw this movie...it was hilarious. Maher did choose some nutty people/organizations to interview, but there was a lot of truth to the issues that were touched on.
many of my coworkers are religious bc obviously they were raised that way. one of them mentioned 'speaking in tongues' and another immediately said "oh thats real!" its a fact. i saw people do it. its real. were so afraid of our mortality and we are fortunate enough to think subjectively. i dont say anything but man... use your imagination. dont let it use you.
I grew up in a church that spoke in tongues. My parents did it. I never thought it was weird at all growing up, I just thought thats what adults do, they worship God by shouting a bunch of weird words that sound like gibberish. Didn't know until I got older than few people even really knew about it.
My dad used to punch and kick plaster walls when he got angry. I thought that was normal behavior. He got pissed off when I told him to install a spring behind his favorite section of wall. It was my earliest smartass.
I didn't see the movie, but there's irony in the way a Christian gets portrayed 'just for laughs'... My wife and I took a homosexual into our home off the streets of Montrose in Houston with full blown HIV/aids (we had 3 small kids); for about a year we made them a part of our family and then God completely healed them blowing the minds of several doctors (yep they said it was a miracle not us)...it is a compelling story of 'religion in America' if Bill would like to do a movie on it I'm open... it's not that there isn't all kind of weirdness in the 'religious' world, I believe that authenticity is a better story, of course you lose alot of laughs but you get a better picture of Jesus and you introduce a skeptic nation to the bible in a way that relates IMHO.
Just for laughs? MMmm.. not so much Bill is actually deeply concerned, as am I, that religion on the whole holds our society back... and is quite harmful.... and sometimes downright dangerous. I laughed, but this movie scared the crap out of me more than anything. Same as with madmax, rhester, you are sadly the exception and not the rule.
I think it would be great if religion, like cigarettes, was forbidden to children under age 18. Concur.
What I find kind of odd . . .is alot of the scientist folx claim to follow deeply . . .well . . alot of them are religious themselves .. *shrug* I still say Atheism is simply Arrogance [If man cannot understand or explain it. . . it is simply luck and no one else could have possibly done it] Rocket River
Hilarious. Yeah, there's nothing at all arrogant about proclaiming that your version of the sky-god myth is the "right" one and all unbelievers are going to hell.
Terrible post, RR. In 1998, a study by Larson and Witham appeared on the leading journal Nature ("Leading scientists still reject God"), showing that of the American scientists who had been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, only about 7 percent believe in a personal god. Religious believers form about 40 percent of the less eminent scientists in America. (less eminent scientists being those who do not come up with theory, but rather followup research from those who pioneer). With 90% of the civilian public believing in a personal God. Pretty stark contrast. Definitely not "most". Atheism is the OPPOSITE of arrogance. Religion is arrogance. We are a "chosen" species. We are special. We are better than. How much more arrogant can you get? Especially when most religions would require you to cast down followers of other faiths. Arrogance epitomized. Atheism is the acceptance of normality. The realization of flaw and the unexceptional. The default credo of the atheist, natural selection, is not *luck* as you falsely present. Natural selection is a very sophisticated method of life carving a path through the ethos and time, not in the least bit like *luck*. Luck would be having some almighty force snap his fingers and create you just the way you are, and with everything else the way it is supposed to be. Pretty damned lucky to be the chosen one with the kingdom of Heaven waiting for you. You could not be more wrong in your assumptions on this issue if your name were Wrongy W. Wrongstein.
I beleive the 'scientist' being more atheistic is a more recent development. Is Natural selection seems more about coincidence and luck. Better yet . . . please explain Atheism to me. I do truly wish to have a better understanding of it. I am not the most religious of people but I do beleive that their are things beyond our comprehension I do beleive that things are made . . and have makers I do beleive most things in the bible are a mixture of metaphor, attempts to interpret things beyond their comprehension and I don't take it all literally I do beleive the bible to be a very good book I do beleive that there is a place and need in this world for Faith I do beleive there is more than just this life I do beleive there is a standard and code of ethics humanity needs to follow for moral reasons as well as necessary to prosper. I do beleive alot of those are in the bible and other 'holy' text While I am no religious scholar nor am I religious 'nut' I have firm beleifs in these things. I am always open to more suggestions I use to be both an agnostic and an Atheist and a person that just did not give a d*mn I have grown and opened myself up to more broader understanding Which I am trying to do here. . . . I am open to the ideas that I truly do not understand atheism I truly do not understand agnostics I know the idea that ones actions and thoughts . . . even those in the most private of moments . . will be judged and they will be held accountable for is a rather uncomfortable thought I accept I am not the world's smartest person on all things I am open to learning more about everything. Honestly DM. . . . I see no conflict whatsoever between Religion and Science. Most of the friction is artificial and arbitrary For the record. . I don't consider myself better than . . . At the least not based on something as simple as religion/creed/race/etc Rocket River just because you know HOW God did something . .. doesn't mean 1. he didn't do it. 2. that it is not miraculous
I don't beleive that . . . 1st of all Hell is for . . . IMO . . .evil people The Definition of Evil People . . is not Different People Rocket River
unless you don't like to make fun of people who believe in god...of course. because we all know, having faith in god is for stupid people {note sarcasm}
