Just gave this thread a quick scan (first page and last). What a surprise to see giddyup here again. If there's a racist to defend, you can count on him every time.

It's been covered in previous threads that Margaret Sanger never suggested aborting the black race, and her quotes were taken out of context to her actions on the civil rights front.

Fair enough, about agreeing to disagree, but as far as sentimentality that a racist would or wouldn't offer is exactly why racism needs to be examined very closely.

Most people who have racist thoughts aren't even aware they have them. Of course Bennet doesn't hate the black the race. One can not hate the black race but still be racist.

Someone who sees black teens, and feels unsafe and moves to the other side of the street, where they would feel comfortable and less threatened by white teens has racist feelings. That doesn't mean they wouldn't hire a black person, be friends with a black person that they came to know etc. They certainly wouldn't advocate aborting all black children.

To be a racist one doesn't have to advocate holding a race down. They only have to have negative stereotypes in their mind based on race. So the fact that Bennet wanted to make it clear that he doesn't think aborting all black babies is a good idea is doesn't excuse him from associating an particular race with crime.

uh...i don't think that's been entirely "covered." she addressed a Klan rally talking about the benefits of abortion. if you're down on bennett, don't discriminate when it comes to sanger. :D

I haven't read much on Sanger, but the info from Giddyup's link and others are reprehensible.

Wholesale sterilization is one small step from genocide.

You know Bennett cleaned up his remarks before anyone else had a chance to; he hastened to clarify that it was a reprehensible solution but the reports certainly don't characterize it that way-- only the audio clip does.

Yet this racist labeling still persists. Racists don't pull back their zingers. Margaret Sanger sure didn't.

what does this margaret sanger person have to do w/ bill bennett?

straight out of the neo-con playbook...how predictable.

conservative says something stupid and you not only defend it, but try to justify it by bringing up some old racist bag from the 1930's, who b/c of her association w/ the development of planned parenthood is obviously a "liberal", thus offering a handy counter to the convervative bennett.

"see how this liberal from the 1930's thought! - look look!"

what does she have to do w/ bill bennett?

based on what i just read about her "work", any reasonable person would say she was wrong, much like any reasonable person would say bennett is wrong.

Again you seem to think a racist is someone who doesn't like black people.

That is not the only form of racism. It has to do with perception based on race.

Again if a person thinks of crime and blacks come to mind, that person is racist. They may not be hateful towards blacks, and they wouldn't want to say that all blacks should be aborted but they are still racist.

For instance if a person saw a black man driving an expensive car, and quickly assumed the driver was an athelete, rapper, or drug dealer, that person is a racist. The person may not want to abort black children, or wouldn't say a mean thing about any black person, and even defend black people against people who do say mean things about them. Yet the person is still a racist.

If you never agree about Bill Bennet, at least please understand that a racist in today's world is hardly ever someone who is truly 'against' minorities, or wants harm to come to minorities. That is very rare these days. More often than not it is someone who holds on to negative stereotypes despite in their heart beleiving they want only the best for all people regardless of race.

Sanger inspired an organization which has resulted in 2 out of 5 pregnancies in the black community ending in abortion. What has Bennett done that is in any way comparable? Any way...

I bet Thomas Sowell won't return his calls anymore!

I think everyone should just chill out and move on. Frankly, Bill Bennet isn't worth this much attention, and certainly isn't worth defending. If someone wants to figure out whether or not he is, just look to his multimillion dollar gambling addiction, which he had (and still does, as far as I know) while pumping out all those biblical morality tales. The guy is the poster child for hypocrisy.

Giddy, there is plenty of other stuff around here for you to spend your energy on, buddy. :)
Heck, there's plenty for everyone else as well.

I don't think it is a competition about who's racism is worse. If Bennet did one racist thing, it isn't excused because Sanger did more.

You are using a highly-charged word in an inadequate way IMHO.

I don't find your under-stated meaning in the dictionary or the vernacular for that matter.

What I described is racism. It is attaching a stereop-type to a whole race. When people assume things about an idividual(my example earlier about a wealthy black person, or crime etc.) based on race, then it is racism.

You are taking racism to mean someone who conciously and actively pursues discrimination.

As long as people don't recognize that making assumptions based on race whether from intentional ill-will, or with no thought of malice is still racism, we can't fully heal race relations within our nation. Until people start seeing individuals as individuals then we are in trouble. Individual blacks can be wealthy businessmen, just like whites can. That is why it is racist to assume a wealthy black person must be rich from rap, sports, or crime. In fact it is more likely the case. But people still hold stereo-types of who is capable of what types of success. Without meaning to people who hold those kinds of stereo-types are selling individuals within a race short. It demeans their place in society even the person who holds those thoughts doesn't conciously hold ill will towards any one race.

I'm actually glad that we are talking about this because it is a huge issue. I appreciate your honesty and thoughts on the subject. I think there are many conservatives who share your idea of what racism is, and that is why they get so mad when people bring up race. They feel like there is an accusation of the kind malice and intentional acts against a whole race. However, that isn't usually the case.
