I wish everyone else did. Especially the voters. But he's not (even if he should be). 3,000 hits. Biggio's in. This "knock" has been dismissed a dozen and a half million times. Lots of Hall of Famers didn't do well in the postseason. It has no bearing whatsoever, except in the minds of fans like you and me. Perhaps ever? Everyone I can think of off the top of my sad head was AL, iirc.
Different eras... that's the argument. I said I didn't agree with it in the slightest, but that's the argument. The guy asked why people are saying Biggio might not get into the HoF and I answered it the best I could.
I wonder if he'll feel the pain of playing in the steroid era. He isn't presumed to have used performance enhancers, but it did decrease the value of his homers. If only his shoulder hadn't gone to crap. He would have 500 homers and his batting average may have not fallen below .300 for his career.
This isn't the first time I've heard something like this. But it's the first time I ever thought about this... One thing we do know is that he didn't use HGH. If he would have his shoulder would have healed. Should players be allowed to use HGH, if legal, to repair injuries? If not in their playing days, why not after they have retired? It's not like Bagwell's shoulder problems have gone away now that he has retired.
There's nothing stopping him from taking HGH now that he's retired. It's not illegal if prescribed by a physician.
I see where he's coming from from one angle: when they were both in their primes, we *all* thought Bagwell had a better shot. Most of us thought Biggio was a longshot. Then he kept racking up doubles and basehits year after year, and Bagwell's shoulder fell off.
I think most people agree with that. But that was the thinking of years ago...given all that has happened in the last 6 or 7 years gives us the full picture and tells us otherwise.. pretty obviously.
I don't understand why people use the he only hit 200+ hit blah blah times in his career. This is not the American league. It's harder to get 200 hits in the NL than AL. Joe Morgan never got 200 hits in a single season. Ryne Sandberg got exactly 200 hits once. How is this a negative?
I've seen this a couple of other times on this board, and I don't mean to pick on you, Akhorahi, but the word is MOOT. MOOT. It is a MOOT point. I am not mute, so hopefully this point will not be MOOT and fall on deaf ears.
Learn something new everyday. I never knew that's how you spelled it. Thanks for that, I remember that next time I use that word.
Yep, because Derek Jeter's bust has been ready for several years now, and their numbers are pretty similar for that stage in their careers, with the exception that Jeter usually played on playoff teams.
No way. Biggio is a first ballott HOF'er w/o a doubt, Bagwell isn't even guarenteed. He might have to wait awhile if he ever gets in. I think he deserves it, but will the voters?
Most of the articles I have read lead with this kind of slant, but only to debunk the notion that people have to question that biggio is a hall of famer. To me, biggio has enjoyed tremendous respect from everyone inside and outside baseball. Was biggio bill james's favorite player? I think that most knowledgeable baseball analyst recognize that biggio is not only hall of fame worthy but one of the greatest players ever at his position. They only ask that question because it allows them to debate biggio's accomplishments.
I can't imagine why there should be any debate at all. A quick look at Biggio's stats puts him among the greatest position players EVER in about a dozen key categories: Rank Among All-Time Leaders ---------------------------- Hit By Pitch -- 2 Doubles -- 5 Power/Speed Number -- 9 Total Plate Appearances -- 10 At Bats -- 12 Runs -- 13 Games -- 15 Times on Base -- 16 Hits -- 20 Extra-Base Hits -- 25 Stolen Base % -- 25 Runs Created -- 27 Total Bases -- 28 Also: Singles -- 36 Walks -- 56 Stolen Bases -- 61 Sacrifice Flies -- 72 (He's also #12 all-time in strikeouts, but that's a stat they started keeping in recent years.) Not to mention: 7 All-Star teams All-Star at 2 different positions 4 Gold Glove awards 5 Silver Slugger awards one of 23 players who have won at least 5 Silver Sluggers one of 17 players who have won a Silver Slugger at more than one position nearly 300 homers (291) nearly 1200 RBI (1175) despite having the 10th most Total Plate Appearances, he's not in the top 100 in grounding into double plays And here's an unrelated bit of trivia I just learned that might win you a bar bet: Who's the only major league player to win a Silver Slugger award with four different teams? Mike Hampton -- Astros/Mets/Rockies/Braves
A quick look at Biggio's stats puts him among the greatest position players EVER in about a dozen key categories: What is most intersting is to see how many players above and below Bigio's in each of those categories are in the HOF. For example, excluding current and not Hall ready players, almost the entire top 50 players in career Total Bases are in the Hall. Craig Biggio's Statistics
by the way, ESPN is doing their "2007 season milestones" because there were so many this year. 25 mins left in the show, Bidge to come pretty soon I think. Tune in NOW
