I got a good laugh out of your comments. Apparently when you don't have a rebuttal to an argument you play the internet anonymous card. "You can spout stats at me all day, but I don't have to believe them because you are posting from behind an internet identity".

You're a scholar and a gentleman. I freaking love those posts. They're required reading at the MadMax house.

i like how he's able to spout off a pre-loaded response for not putting credence in WAR when comparing the two (fair enough, i guess?), but is ignoring every other statistical comparison (besides trophies, of course).

    nice job, sir.

I can't believe he brought up Steve Garvey **AGAIN**!! I mean... Steve Garvey was a very good baseball player - but this idea that his 55-game postseason career is setting the standard for Bagwell - and Bagwell alone - is just... it's unfathomable and he should be arrested on the spot and sent to stupid jail for life without parole.

If I wasn't so doggone stubborn... I'd almost let this convince me that if guys like *this* are deciding who is and isn't HoF-worthy, then the HoF is worthless. But I can't! It's like Sirens calling my weary body to the shore.........

also love how he says that he isn't going to waste votes on guys with low percentages who have lingered around on the ballot like mcgwire, palmeiro, smith, and trammell, yet, he's SURE that at some point in the next 15 years he will toss bagwell a vote.

ah well, F him. here's to hoping Curley Culp gets his due on Saturday.

So I am curious how he compares Frank Thomas to Garvey. Especially with Thomas' less than stellar 16 game playoff performance.

Steve Garvey is seriously one of the most overrated players ever. He wasn't even the best player on that Dodgers infield, even if he was regarded as such at the time.

Unbelievable he remained on the HOF ballot for 15 years when Will Clark got bounced in his first year of eligibility.

    great posts

It's so difficult to logically argue with someone that refuses to understand logic when it's inconvenient for them

I commend you for doing it. And I can't believe someone with that closed-minded attitude has a vote for something important (relatively)

His postseason numbers are pretty remarkable, and given the high-profile nature of the playoffs, I don't initially blame someone for viewing him through that prism - but not for 30 years and not when statistics have evolved to such a point that we no longer need to rely on hazy memories.

The year he won his MVP, some guy by the name of Jimmy Wynn had more runs, HRs, higher OPS, & nearly doubled Garvey's WAR while playing CF on the same damn team. Wynn finished 5th. Mike Marshall went 15-12, and finished in 3rd. Marshall didn't lead the league in any major pitching category. Today, votes like that wouldn't happen.

Jimmy Wynn is a perfect example of nobody giving a damn about Houston. 3 All-Star games compared to Garvey's 10.

Garvey has to be the most overrated player during his time.

Well..... Barry has officially taken his ball and gone home; I wouldn't play his little game of hide-n-seek so...
I can't fathom what my background has to do with a discussion about Jeff Bagwell but... he's hanging his hat on it so... no more fun with Barry. :(

This is the reason why the voting is so screwed up. We got guys like this, that really have no idea what they are voting on. I partly blame the hall because they are so vague on categorizing the criteria, but you would think a person that gets paid to write about baseball would have a clue about, well, baseball. Not voting for Bagwell because of the steroid issue, is at least understandable in this day and time. I don't agree with it, but I can at least understand the reservations. Not voting for him because you think his play on the field was unworthy is just asinine.
