that is exactly what would happen later down the road. If Polygamy were legal, it WOULD lead to 12 year olds marrying 60 year olds. The Polygamy you see on t.v. and stuff is just a tip of the iceberg, Polygamist are filthy, disgusting pigs, that feed off mentally disturbed women. If Polygamy were legal, you would have to make prostitution legal along with making pimps legal. Polygamy is nothing short of a Pimp with multiple women working for him.
Ok, good to see we aren't just throwing out vague and unsubstantiated generalizations about a group of people you probably have very little interaction with or knowledge about...well done.
I'll play all three of the guys (they will play triplets in the story), and it can be on one of those p*rn channels. I think, given those parameters, that your idea is fantastic Deckard.
It sounds bad but it's not far from the truth. Polygamy is not about free and equal adults entering into a marriage. It's usually powerful/ rich men taking wives who are subservient to them. Just show me any situation where 2 or more educated/ self supporting/ self reliant women who want to marry the same man.
I really don't see much of a point to making such a law, other than perhaps to make it socially acceptable to being in serious relationship with more than one woman. The only benefit I see is allowing illegitimate children to grow up in a better environment because they might be legit under polygamy. On the other side, I can see some problems, especially with "arranged" marriages. Mail ordered 2nd wives? In the end, there really is no point, IMO.
Wrong on all counts. Societies with polygamies worked just fine, and has nothing to do with marrying kids. I think that prostitution is much worse because natural tendency is to have multiple partners, and monogamy suppresses that. Hence people look for an out in some other ways.
1. I actually have a friend who's father currently has two wives (maybe 3 im not real sure) but the 2 I know about are both highly intelligent. One is a music teacher and I am not real sure about the other one. The guy has family money but nothing like ridiculous. They all live together on some acreage around here and each woman has her own room...the first wife has apparently said she doesn't get jealous because he always comes back to sleep in their room...the guy is a little off the deep end but very intelligent and manipulative from what I understand. If you met him you would never know, the women too, so saying they are all dumb, filthy prostitutes is absolutley ridiculous. 2. On that note I get that there could be financial benefits of polygamy but stretching so far as to say its basically prostitution is pretty ridiculous as well. I also think there is a big difference between creating laws that prevent prostitution and restricting marriage. 3. I have said before the only concern I really have about it is that it would allow people to abuse insurance and taxes which would raise the rates on them for the rest of us.
I can't think of a single one of those societies were democracies or where women were free. But societies evolve -- or devolve. So, as long as polygamy, homosexuality, beastiality, drug use, etc. etc. doesn't affect me directly, I have no problem with people choosing their own lifestyles. That said, the rest of the populace shouldn't have to subsidize the effects of other people's choices.
1. OK 2. Even Prostitution is legal in some parts of America 3. Isn't that the same argument against gay Marriage? Rocket River
Democracies are not an end all be all... its a compromise that works well sometimes... I dont see how it would have any effect of polygamy. Women weren't free in just about all societies when polygamy was considered acceptable. I'm not really sure how anyone can put polygamy, homosexuality and bestiality in the same sentence. Frankly, if you have sex/kids with more than one partner at a time, you are pretty close already, minus court documents.
I would speculate that freedom is a pretty wonderful perk of democratic government. There is a goodly chance the U.S. will lose that perk in the near future, and you of all people will miss it. That said, once there is no democracy, your new government might be even stricter regarding the less "traditional" forms of unions. With a democracy a majority rather than a minority rules those choices. I vote to include them all -- unfettered. I can lump polygamy, homosexuality and bestiality into one sentence because they are all forms of union -- as are heterosexuality, bisexuality or asexuality (that's for the do-it-yourself-ers ). Please include any form I may have omitted. But, as I said before, as long as it doesn't affect me directly, choose your own lifestyle. I could care less. BTW, didn't I propose eliminating all tax breaks (including children) for all types of union? A flat tax with no shelters on any kind would be the most fair.
Off topic, but democracy and freedom are not mutually inclusive. You can have one without the other, ...
Prove me wrong. Name a true democracy where the citizens were not free or a country with a free citizenry that was not a democracy. Don't give me imperial England because Parliament ran the country in its greatest years. Before that the serfs were not free.
On whose authority are you basing your objection to polygamy on moral grounds? As you have called yourself a Christian, you'll no doubt be familiar with the Word of God as relayed by the prophet Nathan to David... "2 SAMUEL 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 2 SAMUEL 12:8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things." For anyone objecting to polygamy on the basis it's against Christianity, let me warn that your objection is set on very unstable ground. God tells David if he would have needed more wives, they would have been given to him. Discuss.
