Well his only job is to lower and raise interest rates essentially. He’s just running the same playbook and Greenspan, Yellen, etc. have ran in the past to curb inflation or get stingy Americans to go out and spend to juice up a slow economy. On a personal level though, there’s a whole other set of characteristics about him that speak to motives behind the play. I don’t think he cares about unemployment numbers. He’s raising interest rates to find a point where the American consumer/worker stops being able to spend on homes or loans. In the end these hedge fund and bankster guys still see cash as king and it’s in their bias to have the wealthiest Americans controlling the vast majority of the wealth, land, and capital. They don’t trust normal Americans to make good financial decisions essentially. Keep the working hard for the dream. Keep working for less. Keep needing to work until you are 75 because the faster you can own a home and build equity, the faster you can retire. To someone like Powell, retirements in the workforce = doomsday. Long story short, he’s working for the wealthiest billionaires to keep them as the main purchasing power in the US economy. Biden can’t fire him for this motive though when it still aligns with the playbook and if he’s working well with Yellen etc. But we all know Trump isn’t hiring him for this position if he isn’t ultimately in the pockets of the billionaire class.
Powell said this week he isn't going prematurely raise rates and he will be "data dependent" aka he isn't raising anymore. He'll start cutting rates in August according to the bond market. Inflation last summer was crazy high and inflation is measures y/y which will come in cool. WTI is under 70 which means gas is 35% cheaper than it was last which which makes up 35-40% of overall inflation.
