After 4 years of the disgraceful Trump the GOP got almost 9 million more presidential votes that 4 years ago and picked up strength in the US Congress and in State Legislatures across the country in the crucial redistricting year. The Dems have tried the moderate small tweak strategy at least since Obama and previously during Clinton they moved strongly toward Reagan style Conservatism abandoning Unions and the working class for Wall Street and the educated elite, deregulation, tax cuts, mass encarceration, less welfare, just leading to increased inequality and discontentment and losing more and more. Good old Joe and the good old days nostalgia squeaked by due to Trump's mishandling of Covid, but is not strong enough medicine to quell Trumpism, which needs to be crushed or the next Trump style autocrat will come in a smarter more compelling package.
If people wanted that they would have voted for Bernie. Given the amount of seats the dems lost I don't think it would be prudent.
What you do is you come out and play the same game Trump has except without all the bullshit. Keep pressure on China, don't increase taxes (during the first 4 years), and leave Iran and that deal out to dry. The only way to reunite the country is against a common enemy and China already has a target on it's back. Cold War part 2...
I thought this thread was gonna come with an article detailing a convincing argument...I’m disappointed
I love the moderates who pretend that their moderation didn't get Trump in the first place. No one deserves a high horse here.
Nah. Because in real life there are families actually struggling in the US. Tax rates need to drastically rise for the wealthy.
Conservatives called Obama a Muslim socialist communist.... 2020 election..... Joe Biden is the Radical Left. See a pattern?
I like that analogy (I’m paraphrasing, obviously) how politics isn’t a straight line going right and left, but rather a circle with the center at 12 o’clock. As the right and left move away from the center, they eventually get so equally bat **** crazy they meet at six o’clock where you can’t really tell them apart.
So you unite the country by going full Reagan era Republican? Even if you did this Republicans would find something else that once believed in to bludgeon Democrats over the head with.
There yoy go. Thanks for admitting that no matter who we put up there they are going to be called communist. So while we pretend that moderation and "compromise" works, we pass no ****ing effective legislation because Democrats are afraid to defend their positions and retreat unlike the GOP.
Trumpism is right wing populism and Bernie's progressivism is left wing populism. The problem is the former has mythos, traditions, and religion behind it.
Come on now...Reagan didn't invent the cold war...but to keep this country united you can't keep with the status quo if you're a Democrat.
Admitting? It's been their MO.... You say "retreat", but I don't see progressives doing a lot of favors. While I can admit and in fact glad to see more progressives ideals becoming mainstream and even cross party lines, but progressives keep fumbling the ball in the end zone... "Radical left" and "defund the police" were election hurting messages. Woke-ism and political correctness from progressives have caused further divide. The Dem moderates have their issues but so do the progressives, the result is losing the messaging when it comes to election time.
I mean at least with Bernie, the attacks would be in policy so we can debate policy rather than trying to make sure the candidate's son isn't bought by foerign countries. Dem Moderates when a gop politician talks about "taking away your healthcare": "I'm not Bernie Sanders". Instead of, you know, explaining with some attempt at nuance on how a public healthcare system works and how your employer is taking the cost of subsidizing your premiums when they negotiate your salary. That's why I mean by retreat. The don't try to defend their positions nearly as much as they should probably because they sincerely don't want to anger their insurance company donors.
