Barring a trade for a 3rd star (assuming he isn't part of that trade), is it reasonable to assume he won't be a Rocket next year?

Rockets according to Bima Thug (and many NBA executives) expect to have a salary cap of $65-66 million. And also according to Bima, Rockets will have around $8.7 mill in cap room without getting rid of Papa, Ariza, etc. That isn't enough to sign a 3rd star in FA (unless the salary jumps up, which is looking less likely now)

Morey in the past has traded players away if committing to them long-term will hamper the team's chances of becoming a true contender. I don't see Morey willing to lock up Beverly long-term (unless it's a very team-friendly deal) without Rockets having a third star.

Paraphrasing Morey: "The best contracts in the league are true-max player ones and rookie contracts". Ariza seemed to be more of a special case because he didn't get anything back for Parsons, and we needed a player to maintain competitiveness this season.

Morey has said that the team presently constructed isn't at the championship contender level yet.

Do you guys think Beverly will be a Rocket next season barring a trade for a 3rd star?

Depends who that 3rd star is.

If its a PG maybe. If its a PF then Jones, Dmo, or possibly both wont be on this team anymore.

If Beverley wants a big payday then he's not going to be a Rocket next season.

Forgot to add, but I think Beverly will get a contract of at least 18/3

    A couple of things:

First, that $8.7 million figure expressly assumed that the Rockets WAIVED Papanikolaou first. No way they get significant cap room without doing that.

Second, Beverley will be a free agent this summer, but his cap hold will be a miniscule $1.18 million. This means that the Rockets could make other moves (while Beverley stays on the books at that $1.18M figure), then exceed the cap to re-sign him.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm with you in the sense that most people overlook how real the possibility is that Beverley won't be on this team next year. He's going to make a lot of money this summer, likely more than your estimates. I'm expecting him to get at least $7-8 million per year.

Why is everyone so eager to get rid of Beverly when he's not even close to being the issue on this team?

Not if the Rockets sign Dragic or someone else at PG who's superior to Bev(which let's be honest would be most of the starters in this league).

There's about a 25% chance Bev is here next year.

    1. He could be included in a trade for a superstar.

    2. We may not be able to trade for a superstar. In that case we are probably better off long-term to trade Bev for whatever asset we could get for him by the deadline this year, so we can get something of value for him in preparation for chasing a superstar (LaMarcus or Marc Gasol) next summer and not have to worry about matching a very high offer sheet that leads to him being a boat anchor contract, impossible to move.

    3. We may possibly be able to trade for a superstar by the trade deadline WITHOUT including Bev and then be willing to KEEP HIM by matching any offer.

    4. We may possibly be able to trade for a superstar by the trade deadline WITHOUT including Bev and then be unwilling to KEEP HIM by matching any offer because we acquire a superstar at his position and we do not want to be faced with the decision to overpay by matching an offer sheet that is too high to keep Beverley from being an asset because of the size of his contract.

Those are the basic 4 scenarios. 3 of them spell Bev being traded IF we can get good value for him, namely some sort of future first round draft pick or at the very least a very valuable player on a value contract (maybe a rookie contract) and a future high second rounder.

This is why I started this thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=258740

I'm sick of this 3rd star stuff. Harden and Howard is more than enough star power. The Rockets need quality depth and coaching, not some mythical 3rd star.

If they can get him? Sure, go for it, but the lack of a 3rd star is not what the Rockets' problem is.

Nobody on this board is "eager" to get rid of Bev. But given Morey's track record, it is a very real possibility that he will be gone after this season.

Morey loves that stretch 4 superstar that doesn't exist. A landry, west, milsapp, or scola would had been enough.

If Bev asks for a hefty salary raise like >$10M, he's gone.
