The Duke wasn't bad, but jeez, the man was afraid of horses! I'd put my money on Clint. Marion would get his ass spanked.
I LOVE "Shane". Just sitting here thinking about my favorite westerns. I may have to come back to this. I grew up watching westerns and WW2 movies. "Unforgiven" is probably my favorite "recent" western flick. Just amazing acting and directing by Clint. "Red River", "The Searchers", "Stagecoach"... Wayne had so many classics. "Fort Apache", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". John Wayne and John Ford. Awesome combination. Heck, "The Shootist" was really good and Wayne was on his last legs and knew it. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". Wow. High Noon, The Wild Bunch, Ride the High Country, The Long Riders, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Tombstone, Clint's early westerns. Can't decide which is my all-time favorite.
Best Film: The Searchers. Best ever committed to film: (I can't say "Best Western," just sounds funny): Lonesome Dove. Anyone who has never read Lonesome Dove should do yourself a favor and do so.
I agree. That movie is so good it almost shouldn't be classified as a western. That's not to say that westerns are bad, but this movies transcends the genre, and people who don't like westerns might like this movie. It's a classic.
Yah....it's hard to call Lonesome Dove a movie, but if I would have thought of it, I would have included it. Production values aren't on par with newer stuff like Band of Brothers, but Duvall and Jones and Glover's acting performances were superb.
I thought about this one...great movie...but I'm not sure it qualifies as a Western, more of a culture expansion...I can see your point of view, though.
The Life & Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) Jeremiah Johnson (1972) Hombre (1967) Winchester '73 (1950) The Tin Star (1957) The Big Country (1958) MacKenna's Gold (1969) The Gunfighter (1950)
Wow so hard to come up with a top ten.I left tons of great movies off 1. The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly 2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 3. The Outlaw Josey Wales 4. True Grit 5. The Cowboys 6. High Noon 7. For a Few Dollars More 8. The Searchers 9. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid 10. Tombstone
Lonesome Dove ( I know, not a movie technically, but great still) Silverado - Not a classic, but entertaining. What a cast.
Rio Bravo is highly underrated, and superior to El Dorado, IMO. The Outlaw Josey Wales is Clint at his grimacing best. "I had to come back." "I know." "Man's gotta make a livin'." "Dying ain't much of a livin', boy." Unforgiven is one of the all time greats. Tombstone was a blast. The Magnificent Seven was magnificent. The Wild Bunch is damned good. Any of Clint's spaghetti westerns will do on a rainy Sunday. I'm kind of partial to The Alamo. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is an absolute classic. Silverado is a blast that I would put right up there with Tombstone. Man, I just can't pick a favorite! Btw, I also like Young Guns I and II.
