The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Jimmy Stewart. John Wayne. John Ford. Heroism. Cowardice. The rule of law. The end of the West. The last cowboy. Awesome.
Thank you. This is by far the best Western ever made. It is one of the best movies ever made period. There are some great ones that other folks have mentioned already. I will add the Alex Cox film Straight to Hell... if that counts as a Western.
Terrific movie. Some of my favorites are: 3:10 to Yuma, Tombstone, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Young Guns.
Yeah, it's cheesy...but it's GOOD cheese. I liked that one, too. Hackman, Crowe, DiCaprio, and Sharon Stone for eye-candy. Plus, I loved Raimi's style. Good western flick.
I think The Good, The Bad, The Ugly & The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford round out my top three. High Noon isn't far off. Other than the Mexican standoff in The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (for scene), is this the most iconic scene / best introduction in Westerns? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Pu9V85Njg8&hl=en&fs=1&start=15"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Pu9V85Njg8&hl=en&fs=1&start=15" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Clint Eastwood won't.
No, A Fistful of Dollars was the western remake of Yojimbo. More recently there was a Bruce Willis movie in the 90's that took the story to the 1920's. I agree that GoodBadUgly is the classic, but I loved High Plains Drifter in some ways even more. Much smaller scale but it is so goofy and weird for that period of western.
"Il Cattivo" himself? I had forgotten Lee Van Cleef played the henchman in that film. I wonder if it would have been better if he and Lee Marvin switched roles.
A Fistful of Dollars was Yojimbo I have to agree with Durvasa, regarding Seven Samurai. It's my favorite "Western". RIP Kurosawa.
