It wasted our company's time. Time = Money. Also, to make matters worst he blatantly lied and said his vehicle was down to miss a day of work and go to an interview.

All our employees are paid competitvely for their worth. The x-employee knew the pay he was getting himself into - he negotiated his salary and was fine with it. He came to us for the job, we did not hunt for him. Perhaps he went into another career field or relocated?

I'm not upset at all... I could care less about where this individual is working and what he is doing now. I'm just letting you guys know from the other perspective how we view things.

This is what I ended up doing when I was in the situation at my previous job.

At my first job my boss knew I was only going to be there temporarily so there was never an issue with me just telling him I was going to an interview.

Serious post here - to the op:

I know what you are going through - I have just recently started a new job after being out of work for 3 and a half months. There are some definite advantages in that it is a growing company, takes only 8 minutes to get there from my home, and I am getting all kinds of experience in a variety of business operations areas that I would not get anywhere else. The down side of course is that I am severely underpaid. I am making a salary of what I was making back in 2002! I am willing to give it a shot as the owner told me that if things took off, he would give me a good raise and try to get me back to the salary I had before I left the job I had for over 10 years (not my last job but the one before it).

Of course, I am still very much on the lookout for something that pays better but I don't know how I will do interviews as he has me on contract status for my first 90 days as well. I guess I'll do what others said and just ask for time off - leave without pay.

Yall hiring???....I'll be there 1st thing in the morning...say around noonish!!!...
And since we talking employee/employer relations, why not just tell me in advance what type of workers you looking for instead of havin me make up **** on my resume... That **** is mentally draining!!!

Since you're a contractor and won't be paid for hours you don't work, your boss will know that you're not taking time off lightly. He should also know that contractors want full-time work, and shouldn't be offended even if he does suspect you're interviewing. If he doesn't like it, he should convert you.
