I guess because doctors don't make house calls. I'm sure it was explained in the movie, but I don't remember that much about it (I just remember the main character referring to someone as an "old fart", which was changed to "old fudd" for the TV broadcast).
LOL! And then there were shows that should have had spinf offs, but didn't. WKRP seemed fertile ground. Rockford Files ( although it had a sort of spin-off...anyone know?) Rockford tried to generate spin offs...there were a few shows that focused on these two Brooklyn guys, clearly trying to generate interest...but I don't think it ever flew. There were other attemots to generate spins on shows, but I can't recall specifics right now..
Magnum, PI was sort of a Rockford Files spin-off. Tom Selleck's character on Rockford was not altogether unlike his Magnum character, and he did go straight to Magnum from Rockford.
Yes and no. His character on Magnum was based on Rockford, not at all on the never fail, noble to the chore Lance White. It was the hardly ever employed, uses friends, etc. Rockford that Thomas Magnum was based on. But there's more. On an early episode of Magnum, some guys are hiding in bushes near the ocean waiting to meet a smuggling boat, and they're talking about having watched Rockford the night before, and how there was this annoying, goody two shoes character called Lance White....
I didn't watch enough Rockford to know the ins and outs of Selleck's character. I've only seen one episode he was in (and I didn't really watch all of it).
Oh, all of these shows are before my time. I used to watch reruns of Maverick with my gramps when I was about 6 or 7. Loved it, and have wanted to see it again ever since. never have. I Spy was cool, too, and White Shadow.
I remember watching I Spy when they played a marathon on some channel in the late 80s or early 90s (maybe around the time they put out an I Spy tv movie). I liked it, though it was weird for me to see Bill Cosby in something that was different from his Cosby Show character. And, to me, Robert Culp will always be Ralph Hinkley's buddy from "Greatest American Hero"
I loved that show when I was a kid. Tried watching it again as an adult, and while I had develloped an entirtely new appreciation for Connie Selleca, the show in general didn't stand the test of time. I Spy rocked. One of the, if not THE best tv on screen chemistry ever, and they were best friends in real life.
Damn, this thread blew up. Here's the old grey ghost: And of course, that's Robert Blake dressed as a nun driving. Baretta. What a cool show.
Remember the failed spinoff from Married With Children? It had Matt LeBlanc as an up-and-coming boxer living with his dad. Pretty lame attempt at a sitcom. I wonder where Friends would have ended up if LeBlanc had succeeded with this sitcom.
