check out wing tsun. i studied it for ~2 yrs. krav maga also looks like a good choice. wouldnt learn pressure point fighting if youre not willing to dedicate a lot of time to learning it. in an emergency situation, i dont think youll have time to analyze where the pressure point is... id stay away from juijitsu also. juijitsu specializes in fighting on the ground. you wanna get away so... if you want simple and effective, karate/tae kwon do are out. you cant kick someone in the head if they are right in your grill... aikido/hapkido might work. judo would work well but they lack emphasis on striking. i hope this helped.
Far more likely to occur than pulling out a gun as a deterrent because someone is threatening your life. I could care less if someone owns a gun. Have at it. But the facts don't lie.
Do you know anyone who's needed to pull a gun on someone? And knock off the condescending tone, child, or this conversation is over.
Knock off the "facts" speak unless you have some. Anecdotes are not facts. but yes I do know someone.
I didn't really want to argue I just wanted to point out that the stat is total crap. It is about as useful as the fact that your chainsaw is more likely to kill you than kill zombies.
Best self defense technique: Always have MacBeth at your side. Dude ducks and weaves at the right times and is generally a God.
Interesting to revisit this topic with all the cartel violence knocking on the door. Odd, no threat of a Gaboon Viper though.
stop thread resurrecting...you obviously enjoyed it otherwise you wouldn't have bumped this. you're just trolling. anyway, in regards to my first page reply -- I have had my eyes opened in regards to martial arts in the recent months...please forgive me for the poor advice. I wouldn't suggest aikido to anyone who truly needed to defend themselves (and I've studied it significantly longer than any other martial art I've undertaken). not the way it is taught in the US anyway. rocketsjudoka is actually right, run. if you can't...krav maga is a good alternative (if you find a REAL school and not one profiting off of the name of the "art"). reality based self defense courses are good again, if you can find one. my personal favorite would be jeet kune do concepts. that is just my own personal bias. bottom line: if you want to learn how to fight, make sure you pick an instructor that teaches you several things. a) legal ramifications of your actions (ie use of force). b) real sparring, not kata because it isn't going to help you (for that matter, training in REALISTIC scenarios). c) ways to defuse a situation (probably the most important). d) the ranges / tools of combat (weapons of opportunity, proper usage etc). the truth is, there isn't any good defense vs a knife or gun. a lot of what is out there being taught will get you killed (ya! I can disarm someone's gun! totally!). if it's a gun they have...give them your damn wallet! if you're certain they're going to kill you -- all bets are off and the ending won't be pretty either way. the best website I have ever read for self defense: no nonsense self defense there is a ton of information there, so if you're really curious it is worth the time.
I agree. Get away is the best thing to do. Never said it wasn't. It's Friday and I'm bored and all the point of entry shutdowns and violence within 20 miles of my home reminded me about this topic.
I didn't claim that you didn't sir, you were trolling though. after reading some of your replies earlier *I* did believe you were somewhat overprepared though. I don't claim to know where you live or your situation, however. just seemed somewhat excessive. especially with the fire arm demonstrations I've seen (knife vs gun for example...holstered weapon always loses). where do you live? mx?
ahhhh, I'm sorry to hear that. take care of yourself. [edit: lol, I didn't mean I'm sorry to hear you live in brownsville, just that you're so close to all of the trouble.]
Yep. We've known about all this for quite some time. It's just starting to make news, but it's been going on for awhile.
