    Return of the Jedi?

Matrix seems perfect for me. Too bad the sequels didn't add up.

All great choices but I'll have to say Matrix with a slight edge over T2.

I thought Alien was brilliant. Aliens? It disappointed me. A bunch of cartoonish “Marines” dropped into a nightmare. Ripley, such a great character in Alien, is a great character in Aliens again. I loved that aspect of the film, but not a great deal of the rest. “Marines” busy flexing their muscles while waiting to get bumped off by a monster they couldn’t comprehend didn’t do a lot for me. I’ve seen it more than once, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Alien, in my opinion.

Out of the 3 films listed in the title, give me T2. Simply terrific, almost nonstop action entirely believable in the context of the film, tension at times almost unbearable because you cared about the characters. The Matrix? Great science fiction, but as an “action movie,” action more as an art form. Science fiction as art. A far different film, but where I would also put 5th Element.

A great science fiction action movie? Starship Troopers. I read Heinlein’s novel when it came out in the SF Bookclub and wondered if it could ever be made into a movie. Boy, was it ever!

Aliens was amazing when I saw it new at 11 years old. Especially the negative aspect you mentioned. As a kid especially for the year it came out you are thinking look at those bad asses getting owned. Yes it is over the top and cartoonish though as this years go by and you become jaded haha

In saying that matrix is a perfect movie in every way. That is my vote.

Alien has it's share of 'dumb character' plot holes. The crew are just dumb most of the time. But I'll digress. Both are great movies.

Good call on Starship Troopers. I absolutely love that movie for it's action and camp.

Big Trouble is a great movie but it's not Sci-Fi.

You can put The Thing in the great sci-fi pantheon though. Same lead actor and director.

Would make for a great double feature with The 5th Element!

True, it’s not SF. Sort of hard to characterize, which might have had something to do with failing at the box office. That it wasn’t a hit surprised me at the time. I loved it and have watched it several times over the years. Both were directed by John Carpenter, Big Trouble 4 years later.

Interestingly enough, 1982’s The Thing opened on the same day as Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. While BR took in just under $34 million, like The Thing, it was considered a box office failure (big budget, Ridley Scott directing). Both were hammered by Spielberg’s beloved ET, with it’s $600 million+ box office. Unlike The Thing, Big Trouble and Blade Runner over the years both came to be considered “cult classics.” I’m shocked! ;-)
