I think that I have that song on a CD. It is on Pure Moods II. It doesn't really fit with Enigma, Delerium, Enya, or Loreena McKennitt, but it is a great track if it is the same version that I'm thinking....it's not anything heavy - it sounds more acoustic than anything else.

Has anyone ever heard of BOLA SETE?!?!?
An obscure Brazilian guitarist, plays acoustic wild stuff, kinda mixed.
My friend had him on WAXX and then the house fire took it.

    anyone? Bola Sete?

For the moment, I'm stumped. There are certainly some good solos that have already been mentioned, but I'm trying to think of what is the best of the best to me. The problem is, it always depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Good LORD, no Stairway to Heaven??? Jeff Beck's Tele practically forced Page to play well on that one. :)

    In no particular order:

Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin): Stairway to Heaven
    Jimi Hendrix: Spanish Castle Magic
Joe Satriani: Flying in a Blue Dream
Steve Vai: Blue Powder, Big Trouble (from David Lee Roth, Eat em and Smile)
Eddie Van Halen: Hot for Teacher (good grief, that is sick - it's like Eruption played in time with a fast shuffle)
Eagles - Hotel California - phrasing, phrasing, phrasing
    Tony MacAlpine - Agrionia
    Eric Johnson - Desert Rose
Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big) - Strike Like Lightning
Al Di Meola - Midnight Tango
Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) - Sister Christian - cheesy song, unreal solo using a cool dissonent lydian phrasing
Randy Rhodes (Ozzy) - Flyin' High Again
John Sykes (Whitesnake) - Is This Love
Gary Moore - Over the Hills and Far Away

God, all that heavy metal coming back to me. :)

"The Star Spangled Banner," Jimi Hendrix. No, not melodical heaven, but a bold statement. Took some guts to turn our national anthem on its ear during those times.

"Stone in Love," Journey. Maybe not technically a guitar solo, but this features some of Neil Schon's better, er, licks.

    Anything by Mark Knopfler.

"Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. Freaking awesome.

    If I think of more I'll post'em.

BobFinn makes me wonder, "What did I do with my autographed MSG albums?" Hmmm.

I hate wanky guitar solos, most of which are more an exercise in technical masturbation, as opposed to musically melodic explorations and...

    I can't stand the 'country-jazz-rockabilly' genere,

But I'll never get tired of listening to Danny Gatton, widely refered to as 'The best guitarist you've never heard of.'

Specifically, the live album, Redneck Jazz Explosion in which he plays everything from a cover of Song of India by classical Russian composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, to blues classic Opus De Funk, to kitch country classic Raisin' the Dickens by Little Jimmy Dickens, to the Kingsmen's Killer Joe.

To give you an idea how bizarrely incredible the guy is, there are two medles on the album. One is a medly of Chuck Mangione's Land of Make Believe and rock classic Tequila and the other is a combination of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat and Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker(!!!) and he manages to pull both of them off in amazing fashion.

Unlike most of his studio work, where predictably poor recording techniques (too much reverb/put too far in front of the rest of the mix) usualy made the albums unlistenable, the live recording ensures that everything is mixed well. If anybody's intrested I could email them a couple of samples if they ask by email. It is truely a great album.

Don't want the email but thank you for suggesting something I might otherwise overlook.

Jesse Cook is on one of those Pure Moods CDs. He's also very talented.

Great call on Freebird. Billy on Pearl Necklace I like better. As with Hammit on Fade to Black as Caddman called it (Caddman I really like all 3 of your choices--I can't think of any better ones from those 3 guys).

    Other favs:

Too many from Jimi and Jimmy to pick, but I'll throw out the nobrainers Little Wing and When the Levee Breaks. How about Cliffs of Dover for EJ, Ain't Talking About Love by EVH, Crazy Train by RR, The Smoke on the Water guy is slipping me right now.

For a little more obscure ones I also like the solos on Electric Eye (one of the JP guys) and Sons and Daughter (Nevilles) and Running Down a Dream (TP)

Sorry, Freak, you know who can play the drums but Nick Mars isn't making any list here:D
