This thread is like the comments on every single rap video or song on youtube. It'll be one comment about the actual song, followed by 12 dudes submitting their best-ever rankings. No particular order: - KRS One - Common - Canibus (on pure talent) - Big Daddy Kane - Jay Z - Eminem - Nas - Chuck D - Rakim A shame, none of them started after 2000 even Lil Wayne. Of the post 2000 group there's Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris, Kanye West, The Game, Immortal Technique, Papoose, Cassidy, etc...No wonder Lil Wayne gets so much acclaim. But its NOT their fault though that they dont "stack up". Groups like Mobb Deep couldnt come out today and be as big as they were cuz today's rap environment different and audiences dont want the same things. You can't make it big just by being the hardest and "realest" anymore, people want to go to the club and have fun rather than go to the street corner.
THere is only one other poster that put Rakim down I hope yall know who he is He is a legend, influenced Nas and all Rakim for the win
seconded ... i dont understand the love for Kanye ...there is nothing about him that makes him even come close to the top rappers at this time ... all the other guys on that track are alright
that is a bold statement but your opinion nonetheless ... i personally think no one right now is killin em like chamillionaire
Where is my puking smilie when I need it? How anyone can like that trash is beyond me. I guess there is always an audience. I saw him and Ghostface Killah about 2 years ago here in Austin. Good show.
Well, i like the fact that it's mocking the modern lust for money and people's perception of what refugees are all about (did you get that?). Its more funny than something i'm listening to on the way to work. Anyway, you're probably much older than me, so i feel like you and maybe some others could give me some advice. I've listened to some of Gang star, Rakim, and KRS one's older stuff but they always seem to be a shell of their former selves when i hear them now. Is that true. Do they have crappy producers? Del is still good but he's younger. Not really my style but just wondering if you guys had any recent albums from those guys that could be a decent switch up for my Screw tapes.
Honestly, I can't get past the ridiculousness of the sound (of MIA's song), so if there is a message, I haven't bothered to listen to it. As far as rappers being shells of their former selves, it boils down to one thing. Trends. Rap/hip-hop, as much as I hate to say it being a guy that grew up when rap was trying to earn respect as an artistic form of music and expression, has really lost alot of respect because of the crappy producers churning out trash and the pop radio stations that continually play the garbage. And don't get me started on Screw tapes.....enough of my rant. Del has an couple of albums coming out this year (allegedly) including a solo record and one with Hieroglyphics. If you've never heard Deltron 3030, check it out. Jedi Mind Tricks has an album coming out in October. In the meantime check out their record Violent By Design. Also check out Army of the Pharaohs (circa '98) who was started by Vinnie Paz of JMT. Check out Talib Kweli while you're at it.
Well I figured most people would think that since this is a Houston message board. Personally I don't really care for his music though.
Chamillionaire writes catchy hooks, but outside of that and his mixtape racket, that's about it. He's like the Nelly of the south, but slightly less pop.
I guess that's how i feel when someone tries to show me some new conscious rapper but i can't get past the beat that sounds like something i made in the 8th grade and was mixed down by a deaf man. People can hate these major producers all they want but they are not hip hop's problem. Its the crappy rappers that get on the beat. Now, you could make an argument that the evolution of super producers in hip hop has allowed rappers to 'hide' behind the beat. Talib Kweli and Mos Def are definitely some of my favorites, though. Mos Def pwns in movies as well, he was great in Something the Lord Made...hell, he pwns in comedy too. ...i'm not touching that ridiculous Cham/Nelly comment.
This is my list: MF Doom (My fave rapper) KRS-ONE Nas Murs Common Market Panacea Atmosphere Kanye West
In no particular order: Ice Cube The Game Snoop Dogg Too Short San Quinn Mistah F.A.B. Bishop Lamont Jay Rock Crooked I Interesting that nobody mentioned Game especially with LAX dropping. That is one of the best cds to have come out in a long time.
Of course Tupac Biggie but also Jay Z Nas Lupe Fiasco Chamillionaire Rakim Talib Kweli Common T.I. The Game AZ
IMO, the only great rapper still alive is Bun-B. Lots of good ones out there but the best are dead and gone.
Bun B reminds me of the argument I made against Chali2na. He has the same rhythm on every single one of his songs. In international players anthem, they had to add a fast beat to the back of the song on his verse to keep up with him. He is one of my favorites because he has a good voice and reps that HTX but I don't believe he is one of the most talented.
