If I were you I'd try to live nearby the office if possible. No sense in living in Klein or the Woodlands if you're working downtown, as that's a hellacious commute. Also, I'm going to do my best to refrain from making any negative comments about Houston since the Rocketman and Jeff have already posted in this thread. Those guys get pretty defensive about Houston when someone points out an inadequacy.
This may not be the best place to live, but I know where I would love to spend the night at....in between these two:
I live across the freeway from UH. Easy access to school and the downtown district, and most of the trouble makers stay on their side of 45.
texans are brought up to be proud of where they are from. funny how it extends to people's neighborhoods.
I have lived in midtown for the last 3-4 years and love it. If you are looking for an apartment, my friend's apartment locating company could help you out. You get $100 back from him too. www.ezzyliving.com
the woodlands is quickly becoming one of the cooler places in houston.... lots of bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. in a very nice atmosphere. cant wait for panic next month, although i'm sure the police will be annoying. at my age i'd rather live in the midtown or west u/rice village areas, though.
I'll love being able to see DMB or Panic without having to drive 45 minutes each way. I also love the second Cinemark they just opened that shows more "indie" movies.
Meowgi & Master Baiter: not everywhere is for everybody. The Woodlands has it's pros & cons, just like any other place. Personally, I couldn't live there, but I understand why many people would want to. I may be spending a year in Sugar Land in the nearish future, so I may have to re-evaluate my thoughts on the burbs. I also find a hermit living in Clear Lake b****ing about suburbia to be slightly amusing. Threadstarter: There are to TON of apartments/condos around Memorial/Washington & Shepherd/Waugh/Montrose. Easy auto access to the places you need to go. If you want to be able to walk to your nightlife, do Midtown or Downtown though.
I am 25, with several friends in the 23 - 28 age range, and all of us live in the Midtown, Upper Kirby, or Med Center area. You are not going to find a better combination of quality of living and price than these two areas for a young person. I have known quite a few young people that have lived outside these areas. All of them have been bored when living outside them. While they lived outside these areas, they hated Houston and thought it was a crappy city. Some of them eventually moved inside the loop and immediately turned around their perspective of Houston. If you are a young person, new to Houston, you must live inside the loop and west of Downtown or you will be extremely bored and lonely. There is no valid counterpoint to this statement. People that are suggesting the Woodlands are just mistaken. Most likely they are over 30 years old and have kids.
Thanks so much - you guys rock! I guess I'll take a look at midtown then.... Who knows, if i find a southern wife then maybe the woodlands will beckon in years to come.
Oh, that's still on. I'll be feet-wet south of the equator near the end of May. Being back for Thanksgiving is the plan. One of her Polish peeps is retiring & traveling the world for a year, leaving a month or so after we should be getting back from Arg. He needs someone to house sit. We were pretty set on leaving Houston, but living rent-free in a pimp house for a year could possibly change our minds. Just thought of something portentious for the Stros this year: '04: I bug out for Costa Rica, miss 3 months of Stros season, come back for last week of regular season & playoffs. Stros lose in NLCS. '05: I bug out for the Hill Country, miss 4 months of Stros season, come to Houston for weekend during WS. Stros lose WS. '06: Stay in Houston. No playoffs. '07: I bug out for Argentina. Will stay gone through playoffs....
Don't even think about coming back before the end of the playoffs. If you do, we'll make sure you have another airport experience like you did a few Christmases ago.
Actually...I live on the West side, Westheimer right across from Royal Oaks. I absolutely LOVE it. I'm smack dab in the middle of everything, easy access to all the major freeways, and I don't even have to drive to do most things like grocery shopping, banking, eating out etc. This is the first place I've ever stayed at longer than a year, and if I ever move out of this place, it'll be because I'm buying a big house in the 'burbs.
Gosh, you must be so lonely. I've loved living on the west side. It takes me 15 minutes to get to work in the Galleria. I'm within 10 minutes of all my favorite bars. If I want to go to Midtown or Rice Village to hang out with my friends that live there, I can be there in 15 minutes as long as I don't try to leave at rush hour. Being right on the Beltway, we can be to The Woodlands in 30 minutes to see her family or we can be out in Katy to see my family out there in 15. The only thing I hate about my apartment complex is the damn U-Turn I have to take on the Beltway frontage. Luckily, we're moving to the inner part of the Beltway and will never have to deal with that again unless I want to grab two for one Camel Lights at the Stop and Rob by our current place.
That's near Denver Harbor correct? Not trying to diss your place or anything, but that whole area around UH is one of the worst areas of town in terms of crime and ugliness.
