I got a 720p Elite Kuro for a grand under the retail price at Tweeter. We saw it at Best Buy and liked it so we decided to shop around for it at other places and we found it at Tweeter discounted a grand, brand new with 0% interest for I think a year. The picture is better than any 1080p we compared it to, besides the 1080p elites haha.

My family has bought a bunch of Vizios and I think they are great tvs. I paid more for a much smaller Bravia a couple years ago than I did for the 47 inch Vizio.

    Pun,
go name brand if you get a big tv. I'll let the Vizio owners vouch for Vizio, but for a main TV, i wouldn't get it.

Like I said if you want bang for your buck, you should get a DLP.
here's the bestbuy deal for 1080p dlp

its much better than anything you are looking at now in picture quality and reliability. you get the LED which gives you something like 50,000 hrs of tv watching
and you get the 120hz feature which found on high end tvs.

Tinman, that looks like a terrific price for that display, but wouldn't still having the angle viewing issues DLPs have?

depends on how you position your tv. you can go to the store and do several sitting angles based on your place and see if it bothers you.

A friend of mine who's a HDTV newb, got a DLP recently. he's more than happy with it. he has it setup in the corner position and i don't see any viewing angle issues.

I have a very awkward place in my living room where I have to place the display. It's a real pain, along with all the windows I have. A DLP would be perfect in our bedroom, except that we need something we can stick on the wall. Otherwise, there are no issues. In fact, a plasma would work very well, despite what I've said about their flaws here.

I don't think all DLPs have viewing angle issues, I can sit off to the side at a pretty severe angle and still see the picture with a minimal amount of fade.

IMO, it differs based on brand.

Tinman and/or others, what are your thoughts on the Samsung LN52A650 52-inch LCD. I am hearing some good things about this TV.

    http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-ln52a650/4505-6482_7-32887597.html

    Product Summary CNET Editors' Choice

The good: Superb black-level performance; highly accurate color; improved 120Hz de-judder video processing; fine standard-definition processing; broad selection of picture setup options; can display weather, news, and stock info onscreen; energy-efficient compared with most like-size LCDs.

The bad: Relatively expensive; red-colored frame isn't for everyone; shiny screen reflects ambient room lighting; some artifacts when de-judder modes are engaged; awkward click wheel remote.

The bottom line: If you don't mind its red frame, the Samsung LN52A650 LCD HDTV will reward you with a massive feature set and excellent picture quality.

I'm actually seeing better average reviews (both professional and AVS) for the 5 series Samsungs.

Im leaning real heavily towards the LNxxA550 (40 or 46 I havent made up my mind yet)

It seems to be very solid with most reporting no problems out of the box and needing only minimal adjustments.

and it is right at 1500-1600

but the 6 series are good tvs also, just a little pricey for what ya get.

hey guys, what is your opinion on these two tv's? Going to be used as a main tv, not for any gaming purposes (rarely at best). Just normal tv watching and sports...And can someone clarify for me the difference between 1080p and 720?

1080p is the highest resolution. 720p /1080i is the basically the standard hd broadcast for hdtv.

actual 1080p sources are bluray and video games.

the difference between 1080p and 720p are noticeable only on larger tvs 55+inches cause the pixels are so small.

resolution does NOT equal better picture. Contrast ratio, video processing, black level, color decoder are more important.

    philips vs vizio?
its close. my parents have philips lcds and they work great so far.
i've heard good things from vizio owners.

if you compared a higher end brand like sony or samsung, i'd easily pick those.

both tvs should be fine for tv watching. however, the philips has 3 HDMI inputs which is better than the 2 of the Vizio.

HDMI is the easiest way to setup your new tv with a dvd player, hd box or game system. its just one cable with both sound/video

I lean toward the Philips with the extra HDMI slot.

It still amazes me the huge price swing in TVs. The same TV could swing in price by almost 1K depending on where you get it.

I am looking hard now at the new Panny 50 800U and it lists around 3100 at some places but Amazon has it running at 2300.
