    Well I would like a big screen but I am definitely looking forward to the picture as well. What combo of things makes a great picture and what should I look for? Let's say I go flat panel, what are some must haves? Let's say I go DLP, what are some must haves? What is a good contrast ratio and what's the difference between LED engine and whatever else is out there? I'll check out OneCall.

    so here's the state of hdtv in a nutshell. lcd rules. plasma has gone toward high end customers. dlp is the last of the big box tvs. led is a light source that replaced lamps in dlps. basically if u have a dlp u have to swap out lamps every 4 years. with led, u don't. dlp is focused now on really large tvs 55 and up.
    if u buy a primary tv I suggest name brands.
    don't forget the advantage of the flat panel is it takes up less space. think long and hard about that.
    lcds tend to be good for video games. plasmas are good for movies. dlp is good for large spaces.

    tinman, after taking your advice and actually going to the store and looking I think I am going to go with a 46 inch LCD model. I saw a lot of great ones down here in Little Rock, their Wal-Mart has a much bigger selection than either of the ones in my hometown and they are plenty big and around $1000.

    Now my question is, you said stay away from non-name brand models. I would like you to give me a list of brands that are good along with a list of those to stay away from if you don't mind. Thanks for all your help in this decision.

    I'd normally would stay away from the cheapo brands, but i heard vizio was good . also, if you buy something that size 46, your risk is higher with the cheap brand.

    cut and paste the models you are looking at and we'll tell ya what we think!

    Here are some that I saw but keep in mind these aren't the only ones:

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7756623

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8586330

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8071290

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5645641

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9106634

    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5633685

    Like I said, I am unsure about resolution, contrast, brightness, and all those other factors. I want to get a good deal but at the same time I don't want to pay for something that isn't worth it.

    May I ask what is wrong with those brands? Nothing wrong with refurbs at all, if I can get one.

    low tier brands tend to have lower customer satisfaction.
    for example, RCA sucks.

    I know, I had one.

    RCA=Loren Woods
    Samsung=Hakeem

    Sanyo, they only sell it at walmart.
    Polaroid, dude
    Polaroid=Kelvin Cato

    I'm weary of Samsung products as I have had a lot of trouble with other electronics they make and I have bought. I thought Polaroid and RCA would be some of the name brands though, maybe not.

    They are excellent for LCDs. you should make a poll of what brand to recommend. Polaroid, dude...They last time they did anything good.."Shake it like a polaroid picture".. yeah. Samsung is premium. Is there a Best Buy near you?

    Ok, if you are not down with Samsung, this would be nice too:

    Pun,
    are you afraid of buying online? the tax savings alone are worth it. plus delivery is easy.

    BTW tinman, the thing I am most nervous about is the specs on the TV and picking up one that is not that good. Like I have stated several times before, I know nothing about them.
