Yeah, I was so hyped for Inception I watched its trailer once a day before its release. But after I saw it, it was like, okay decent movie, original concept, but definitely nothing special. I think people like it because it has that "cool" factor. But in terms of being the best in cinema, I don't think so. It doesn't hold a candle against real movies like There Will Be Blood, Shawshank, Green Mile, even Slumdog... movies with real emotion and storytelling.
You know though that people like different movies for different reasons right? Some people probably fell asleep watching Shawshank Redemption because that's not what they watch a movie for. Anyway... I thought this year was pretty bad. I think inception was executed very well, as was shutter island. Book of Eli was overly dramatic for my taste. Slumdog millionaire was a gorgeous-looking movie with a very traditional story - I think that's what they were TRYING to do and hence I thought it was done very very well. (was that this year?) I haven't seen Toy Story 3 yet. Overall, in 2010 it was rare for me to say "I have to watch that!!" except for inception, which turned out to be a movie that was extremely to watch just to see how the director sees it in his head.
I'm surprised no one mentioned King's Speech. Probably not many people will watch it, but it was damn good. The demographic of the theatre did seem to be older folks though.
Inception is very good and very well made. not quite as mind blowing as Memento or sixth sense, to me those are mind blowing, like I had no idea what I was getting into when I went to see it. I knew the premise of Inception and got what I expected which was a great moving with a great and original concept. Love the dream within a dream within a dream idea and how the events in the real world trigger events in the dream, just stuff everyone has experienced before but no one ever actually put it on the big screen. Makes you think alot too, so no I don't think it's mind blowing but i don't think it's over rated either, very solid movie.
Best (that I watched) Inception The Social Network Toy Story 3 Kick Ass Worst/Most Disappointing (that I watched) The Fighter Shutter Island Splice
Dreaming within a dream is not really an original concept: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-dream-within-a-dream/ I'd even go so far as to them ripping off the beach imagery from this poem by Edgar Allen Poe, lol. I believe the underlying theme about him and his wife was more interesting than the actual heist taking place (which is what the top spinning in the end was eluding to if you conclude it never stops spinning). I don't like endings with a lack of closure, just my opinion.
i haven't seen many of these films just yet but, of the ones i have seen, i would have to go with "The Road" at this point as one of my faves. i just thought it was really well done and may be my favorite post-apocalyptic film to date.
Didn't see a whole lot of movies this year. Good: Inception Kick Ass Toy Story 3 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo The Girl Who Played with Fire The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest How To Train Your Dragon Decent: Tron Legacy The Karate Kid(surprise that it was enjoyable) Alice in Wonderland Terrible: The Book of Eli Unstoppable The A-Team Clash of the Titans
My problem with Inception was that a third of the movie was exposition attempting to make plausible an implausible science. My guess for why Leo's character is so wooden and less interesting than the rest of the cast is because most of his dialog is him trying to get the audience to buy into the reality of tinkering with the human sub-conscience. There's already a level of suspension of disbelief when watching a movie like this so just use that and focus more on the characters. Take Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie that deals with a similar topic of going into the brain and rearranging the conscience, it never spent a great deal of time with some bogus reality talk about the possibility of altering the memory. It was just assumed that it could happen and more time was devoted on character development and plot. Thus a better movie.
Liked it for what it was, and despite some massive plot holes. Such as... Spoiler "Oh no, one guy got hurt in an attempt to be lowered onto the train...I guess we might as well give up on that strategy and risk hundreds of thousands of lives." Plus, it can't possibly be that hard to land on the back of the train. Especially compared to this. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8ZyGMKpgyHA?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8ZyGMKpgyHA?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
I was totally surprised to see recently that Unstoppable had an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Looks like I may have to see that at some point after all.
