There is a difference between a film score and soundtrack. Personally, I think favorite film score is a more interesting question. A soundtrack is basically a mixtape that some dude made after watching the movie. Two of my favorite film scores have already been mentioned - Laurence of Arabia and Once Upon a Time in the West. Part of the thing with both those films is how great they are as films, and how integral the music is when you watch them. You can't separate the two. The other that I can think of that is like that is the score from Dr. Zhivago, aka Laura's Theme: <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nynMR6AZ8Rc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nynMR6AZ8Rc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> Most of the truly great scores to films came in the 1950's and 1960's, when movies used to have an intermission in the middle of the film, and people would go outside to smoke and get popcorn. It made the idea of a film score more a distinct part of the film, and you had great composers working with full orchestras to get it all right.
