Any band that Maynard writes for is usually pretty deep, atleast thought provocing. I think Jonathan Davis puts out some good lyrics, his first album was the best and its went downhill since tho.
I'd have to also throw my nod to Death Cab for Cutie for current bands. I also have a great fondness of Jellyfish, although none of the members have done anything lyrically great since they disbanded (except Manning Jr and Dover on Imperial Drag's lone album).
As much as I used to love the Deftones when I was in middle school, Chino's words aren't special. When you say a bunch of incoherent stuff just to be considered artsy, it loses it's effect. Same goes for Staind, one of the most over-pretentious schlock rock crap bands ever. Don't even get me started on Mars Volta. They think "will this sound weird if I say it?" If the answer is yes, they say it. That's not deep, it is also pretentious. Modest Mouse does have good lyrics without trying too hard. Co-signed.
Waters was my #1 pick. As soon as the word "lyrics" is mentioned, I think of him. An Honorable Mention in my list goes to Trent Reznor, for a twenty-year, eight album career made up of finding new and exciting ways to tell us he's depressed.
you should listen to better music if you think staind is lyrically deep. and the mars volta is garbage as well... extraordinarily weird just for the sake of being weird. give me the drive by truckers, or the incredibly juvenile-yet-fantastic black lips, or some warren zevon, or townes van-f***ing zandt, or the grateful dead....
A few verses from The Clash's "Death or Glory": Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world, Ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl. Love 'n hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands, Hands that slap his kids around, 'cause they don't understand how, Death or glory, becomes just another story. Death or glory, becomes just another story. 'n every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n roll, Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold, But I believe in this and it's been tested by research, He, who ****s nuns, will later join the church. From every dingy basement, on every dingy street, Every dragging handclap over every dragging beat, It's just the beat of time, the beat that must go on If you've been trying for years, we 'ready heard your song Death or glory, becomes just another story. Death or glory, just another story?
Ahh yes, another music thread. The place where the cool members of ClutchFans can let the rest of us how uncool we are for liking certain bands. Also, putting video/audio on autoplay is still not cool.
not much representation for rap. Immortal Technique ("The Payback" is nice) Lupe Fiasco Jay-Z (hate all you want, his non-radio stuff is smart)
Excellent choice. Some of the others I like have already been mentioned, but a few haven't. - Elvis Costello - David Bowie - The Who - The Kinks And by far the greatest hip hop lyricists - Jurassic 5
im surprised no1 has talked about jim morrison yet him and dylan were poets in song form. i also greatly admire marley for what he meant to a whole nation and his peaceful, soothing lyrics
