They don't really have another name, but they're often seen as crossfit resistance bands because they use them for pull ups. A general search for resistance bands will give you results too. Pay attention to the description, as sometimes the small ones (~20in long) are photographed to look like the longer ones (~40in).
I say ignore those talking about rubber bands, bowflex, isometrics & all-in-one setups etc. & will second suggestions on a rack & bench. There are no substitutes for free weights. At the very least a smith rack. Otherwise, just pay for a membership.
Whats the substitue for resistance bands? If he wants a well rounded gym and program, he wouldn't just ignore everything else.
