I really like Perry's Steakhouse in Clear Lake. I've been to Ruth's Chris and the steak there was awesome too. Can't go wrong with either one of those places.
Go to Sam's. Buy whole tenderloin - $ 65.00. Have butcher cut it for you into 2 inch steaks. Rub steak with seasoning. Enjoy. Or, cook it first. Then enjoy. Many Steaks. The whole Ribeye is also good. Churrasco's makes a steak worth paying for. I normally hate restaurant steak, but they cut it up good.
I need to try some of these places, I haven't really been to a high end steak house. I've been to Taste of Texas, not really impressed. I think one of the best steaks I had was at Texas Roadhouse and that is obviosly not high end. The steak just tasted so damn good and it was very tender. There wasn't much effort involved in cutting it. Fogo de Chao is very good but you want to make sure you go on an empty stomach and early so that you can take some time to let your food digest and continue to eat. Something that's overlooked about Fogo is that they have one of the best salad bars in Houston. So much stuff that you don't find at other places. Also, they have some good rice and black beans. Can't forget the fried bananas either. I don't really like Buen Bife. You can't just order something for yourself, you have to cordinate with the other people who are eating with you, I hate that.
I'm kind of in the middle between the cook at home and go to the steakhouse camps. Generally, I prefer to cook at home, but there is something special about getting USDA Prime. Yes, you can get USDA Prime at certain meat markets, but not all the time. For instance, the last time I checked Central Market, the only Prime cuts they had were Rib eyes. And that was it. I'm kind of a Porterhouse or a filet guy, so that didn't do me any good. Furthermore, the ribeyes were almost twenty bucks a pound. At that price, it's hard to justify NOT going out. Also, when the carcass is graded, they just grade it at the Rib eye, so it's technically possible to get a tenderloin that cuts out more superior steaks from a USDA Choice carcass than one from a Prime graded carcass. You kind of have to know what you're looking for, and you can damn well bet that when a restaurant buys a case of prime graded tenderloins, they don't throw out the poorer cuts from the loin. Each whole tenderloin will produce a variety of cuts, some of them better than others. The best steak cut from a USDA Choice tenderloin will invariably be better than the worst cut from a USDA Prime tenderloin. That's just the way it works. Given that, I generally prefer to cook my own at home. After all, I cook them better than any of those places. That being said, I sometimes enjoy the steakhouse experience, and it is nice to get that "Prime" steak. Sometimes they are really worth the money....sometimes they are a disappointment. Generally, I've had good experiences at Perry's in Clear Lake. I've had some good experiences at Pappa's. I'm not particularly fond of Morton's. I haven't necessarily had bad service or a bad cut there....I just think they can't cook their steaks worth a crap. I NEED to try V&A. For a relatively inexpensive good steak and good time, I'd definitely recommend Rudy & Paco's on the island.
i'm surprised Pappa's on westheimer has hardly been mentioned. although quite expense ($500+ for six) and high end (multiple Bentleys in the parking lot), their filet was unbelievable! no seasoning, other than salt, pepper, and butter. aged well, tender enough to cut with the fork alone. hands down one of the finest foods i've ever eaten in my life. everything else was specatacular as well. plus they had an impressive wine/spirit selection ($500 for a shot of cognac ). and not to mention that you just feel important sitting in a place like that. the service was only decent however. only drawback. i'm done.
For a steak that's a little bit different (with a sauce on it) try Cafe Montrose. It's actually a Belgian restaurant with some of the best (IMO!) fries in Houston.
$500 for 6 people? Damn, some of y'all have money to burn. Of course, I'm so cheap, I don't think I'd do that even if I won the lottery! Naturally, I'm more of a cook-at-home guy. I've been buying prime rib from Sam's lately. It's excellent, and you can cook it just to your taste.
Never had their steak, but their fries (frittes) are unbelievable. Their steamed mussels are out of this world as well.
