There used to be a place near The Galleria called Lukes? It looked like a hamburger joint. It it still there? Any good?
Brooksmith - Heights area of Houston - "Some Burger" Also the "Pigstand" Then in the Brazosport area (that's down 288 South from Houston), it's gotta be "Smithhart's"... then maybe "Dink's Brazos Grill." Here in Dallas, Addison & now Plano it has to be "Snuffers." Dude, I'm hungry! Cliff's - "Over one dozen served." Last time I saw one was a couple years ago, but then... I haven't really been down that much during the day except to pass through to my dad's. "Texas Land and Cattle" has a good $6 burger.. but then so does the fast food chain "Hardee's", and at only $3. No one's mentioned DQ? In Texas?
Me like the Cliff burger I think there is still one on westhimer someplace near Hwy6 I think...Could be gone havent been in years
I prefer local places to chains. Therefore, my Houston area faves are.... Lankford Grocery (near W. Gray and Bagby) - one hell of an old timey burger. I took my Dad here once, and I thought he was going to get on his knees and thank the Lord. Annie's (S. PostOak and West Bellfort) - the neighborhood favorite. Been eating burgers here since I was a kid and it was known as something else. Damn fine burger. Tookies - excellent burgers down in Kemah area. Roznovsky's - used to eat burgers there all the time when I was a kid. Need to go back and check it out again. Christian's Totem - heard from a friend that their burgers were the shizznit. Might find out Friday night when the Dukes of Houston play there.
Agreed. The one time I went to the Billy Goat I was pretty unimpressed with the burger. Just had to go because of the whole SNL vibe.
In n Out , The Double-Double is the best Fuddruckers is OK, but I can grill better then they can make it for a heck of alot cheaper.
When you guys mention Whataburger, you make me homesick for one of my oldtime cheap favorite meals when I was low on cash - the $1.32 32oz shake. It's a drink, it's filling and it's a dessert.
Go Fuddruckers. I'm also a huge fan of the Sullivan's in downtown Austin, where the most amazing burgers are half price on Sunday nights!
Can you believe I still have never been there? It's just on the other side of the freeway from my home I live in now...and just down the freeway from the neighborhood I grew up in...and I've never been there! Grin's in San Marcos was really good...not sure if it's even still there. I echo Steak and Shake...they don't have them in Houston anymore...used to be one on Memorial Dr. between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood...but now I eat them when I visit my in-laws in Little Rock. there's also a place called The Purple Cow in Little Rock which serves a very strong burger! I like Charlie's... and Miller's (particularly the grilled onion burger).
You know, Steak 'n Shake came to the Dallas area a couple of years ago with much fanfare. Everybody that had tried one in other states said "oh these are the greatest burgers on the planet". Everyone here I've talked to that's tried one says they're ok, but nothing to die for. I haven't tried one, so I'll reserve opinion.
I have to say I find this amusing. Luke's used to have two restaurants in the 70's. Unfortunately, he got a divorce and had to give up one of the two restaurant's. His ex obviously didn't want her ex's name on the marquis, so she changer the name to: Annie's, which, apparently now has some of the best burgers! Believe it or not, Luke's used to be good. It went downhill fast in the 90's, though.
Although I am on a diet, Blakes bbq on Jeanetta makes the best hamburger in Houston. Their chili and bbq sausage are killer as well.
Thanks for putting it all together for me. The place that is now known as Annies was called Lukes when I was growing up, and it was good. I ate at the Lukes at Westheimer and 610 sometime in the mid-80s, and it sucked. Leave it to this BBS to straighten out my prematurely Alzheimers-addled mind! Thanks Fatty!
Cliff's on Fountainview right before/ or after Westheimer. Their burger's and fries were one of the things that made it worth working in that traffic hell hole.
T-Bone Tom's in Kemah Hawaii Write In Vote: Duane's Ono Charburger on Kauai. These guys can honestly compete with any mainland grill. My wife loves their teriburger.
