Actually, Mamoun's might not sell shawarma's but the other famous place on Macdougal St. is Ali Baba. I'm pretty sure they have shawarma's. Check this thread: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/432544
Yeah this is a good place. My dad use to take me there also. I wish i was a kid again so I don't have to spend my own money on gyros.
Cool thanks. I'll definitely take a look at that thread. Actually I tried Chicken Shawarmas at Le Rendevous Cafe on 8th ave near 46th and 47th st. and they were very good and I would definitely recommend but good in a different way. First of all they came in pita breads rather than a wrap and the chicken and sauces had a different flavor. Not sure which is the true shawarma but Shawarma King was my first and I just love theirs so they are my standard.
Kojak's on West 18th makes good Gyros. They are the special on Tuesdays at lunch, but are on the menu all week.
Super Pita, on Hillcroft between South Braeswood and Willowbend. $4.25 for an Israeli style falafel with fried veggies on top. Can get it regular or spicy. Trouble is, they are closed Saturdays (natch) and they only have two small tables outside to sit in. Me hungry now....
Hey Pun, it's pretty much a Greek sandwich. They use flatbread and inside put gyro meat(usually a mixture of beef/lamb), vegetables, and tzatziki(sp?) sauce.
Truly Mediterranean in San Francisco makes amazing Lamb Shawermas. Best I've ever had by far. Never had what I considered to be a good or great Gyro or Shawerma in Texas. Holy crap! Now I have a major craving for a Shawerma. Need to go into SF this week. Or, now.
I went to super pita yesterday. Man that was one big sandwich. My only complaint is that the fried vegetables (potatoes) were so greasy. But man I ate every bite. Guy behind the counter was real cool. I said it was my first time going there and he gave me a free pastry. I will be going back there again.
