I saw Marshall Crenshaw play John Lennon at the Music Hall (1980, 3 days before Lennon was shot dead) in the off Broadway production of Beatlemania.

Bob you ever listen to Paul Roger's other band Free? Not their first, but one of my top ten!

ok, one more, and likely one that's not one anyone else's list, but was in much heavier rotation in my room than ostensibly similar LPs by Boston or Bad Co.

    From the AMG review:

"Showing off Head East's intriguing and quite effective blend of hard melodic rock with progressive rock tendencies and awesome vocal arrangements, this disc is a classic."

Actually, the inspiration for this thread was ,I was watching Bad Co.'s concert DVD, and the memories came flooding back. They played most of that debut album, including the classic "Seagull" which is just Paul and his acoustic. IMHO it is the best album ever.

I can't believe the Velevet Underground hasn't gotten more due, or Zappa's Freak Out.

    A couple more...

Off the top of my head..

    Television - Marquee Moon
    Wilco - AM
Violent Femmes (self titled) and still making a living off of it
    New York Dolls (self titled)
    Montrose (self titled)
MC5 - Kick out the Jams
    The Smiths (self titled)
    Led Zeppelin (self titled)

Bob, BadCo were such veterans (Mott, Free, King Crimson) that it seems almost unfair to include them, but I'm not b****'n. I saw them in support of that LP at Hoffeinz (can't even remember who they backed up - I was there to see Mick Ralphs' new band).

if you don't have the debut, you really don't know the band! self-produced, it was eventually picked up by A&M. none of their other albums ever came close to this one. in addition to "never been any reason", "love me tonight" and "lovin' me along" are classic tracks, but the whole album is fantastic.

Technically, their first album was Pollywog Stew from 1982. They were a punk band then. I think that the drummer from Lucious Jackson was actually playing for BB back then. I could be wrong.

    Anyway my list is...

    Wilco...AM
    Son Volt...Trace
    Sublime...40 oz to Freedom
    G. Love & Special Sauce...self titled
    Black Crowes...Shake Your Money Maker
    The Gourds...dem's good beeble

Funny, I was going to start this exact same thread two weekends ago when, by pure coincidence, I listened to Outlandis d'Amour, My Aim Is True, and The Pretenders all in a row. But I was too lazy to start a thread. :)

Lots of great records have been mentioned already -- here are some of mine:

Talking Heads: 77 (More Songs was NOT their first album)
    The Pretenders/The Pretenders
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
    Jeff Buckley - Grace
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
    Van Halen
    U2 - Boy
    REM - Murmur
    Velvet Underground and Nico
    The Doors/The Doors
    Tracy Chapman/Tracy Chapman
    Led Zeppelin I
    Pearl Jam - Ten
    Pete Yorn - Musicforthemorningafter
    Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood
    Violent Femmes/Violent Femmes
    Joe Jackson - Look Sharp
    Hendrix - Are You Experienced
    Living Colour - Vivid
    Indigo Girls/Indigo Girls
    Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Sinead O' Connor - The Lion and the Cobra
    Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
    Fugees - The Score
Go Gos - Beauty and the Beat (no, seriously!)
    The Vines - Highly Evolved
    Belly - Star
    Franz Ferdinand/Franz Ferdinand

Yeah, I know it's a long list, but I've been kicking this around for two weeks ... ;)

    Here's some more:

Weezer "s/t" (can't remember if it was mentioned)
Toadies "Rubberneck" (not sure if it counts ... they had an EP, but so did GnR)
    The Knack "Get the Knack"
    Garbage "s/t"
    Buckcherry "s/t"
    Ace Frehley's first solo album
Poison "Look What the Cat Dragged in"
    Enuff Z Nuff "s/t"
    Supergrass "I Should CoCo"
