Best bands this decade who haven't released a CD before 1999: Coldplay The White Stripes Wolfmother Honorable Mention: Audioslave Velvet Revolver
I'm actually not Canadia. I heard about them through a friend, who also wasn't Canadian... It's a shame they're not really known in the states.
any answer other than the White Stripes is a wrong answer. although other good ones are: my morning jacket heartless bastards kings of leon ryan adams, although he released a few albums w/ whiskeytown prior old crow medicine show cold war kids, but they need to release another solid album to really earn a spot... i remember being impressed w/ the few new tunes they played at ACL
It's a tie between these two at the moment: LCD Soundsystem Les Savy Fav Honorable mention: !!! Out Hud Chromatics American Sneakers Man Man Hot Chip Battles Dungen
wow, there is a lot of White Stripes love here. Maybe I should start a "top ten White Stripes songs" thread. Althouh I like the WhiteStripes my vote went out to System of a Down because of their influencial lyrics and the topics their songs are about.
and I'm just not getting it... yes, they're good, they're fun, remind us well of good and fun "rock" of once upon a time.. lyrics and music quotable and enjoyable alike.. but... greatly influential? culturally significant? i just don't see it.. certaintly not the next Nirvana.. i don't even see evidence of them having the "cultural" effect of a take-them-or-leave-them Guns 'N' Roses..
Based on quality AND quantity AND consistency it has to be the White Stripes. Four great albums so far this decade, no bad albums, and still going strong. I think the band that has the best shot of catching them is the Arcade Fire. Man trying to think of bands' this decade made me realize how much better the 90's were for music. I mean, at the present time I feel the White Stripes can't even be surpassed this decade. Yet, I can think of probably 10 to 20 bands in the 90's I like more than the White Stripes. Almost all the bands I can think of this decade have only had one or two good albums and then a crappy second or third one and already appear to be out of ideas.
bingo. meg's pancake-hand drumming isn't an accident - it's part of the sound. jack doesn't need a bassist, flashy synth, or even a steady beat - he's stripped down rock music to it's garage core and just makes amazing riffs. i think he's more in tune with the history of rock than nirvana. he's got a whole blues component that they never had. that said, i'm still a nirvana fan. he's got crazy technique, knows how to appropriately fly off the handle, and can play anything from bluegrass/country to grunge to art rock to dirty blues. i think they make a huge artistic statement also - "de stijl", the red/white/black scheme, the mystery with the brother/sister/spouse, it's all part of one image that's really different. the radio stuff isn't all their best material: here's my favorite: ball and biscuit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03YUgHAshSo&mode=related&search= enjoy!
i said i didn't see what the big deal was.. as far as being greatly influential or having a significant impact on the culture.. never said they weren't good.. if I was bringing his musicianship into question and the quality of his music from a technical and capable standpoint.. i doubt I'd be using Nirvana as a comparison..
Well if we are going by not releasing their first CD until 1999 that eliminates Wilco, Radiohead, and Sigur Ros (they did "Von" in 1997 but wasn't available in the US for several years after that). So, I am going to go with Interpol who I saw this past Saturday at the Ryman with the mrs. The 2nd time I have seen them and they were freaking brilliant as I knew they would be. And really it is Interpol with them lapping the rest of the field. But I will also include these bands: Bloc Party Coldplay The White Stripes
too early to say. quantity over quality? the arcade fire has two albums, but what great albums. i think if the arcade fire continue to progress, they could become the next U2. i don't mean sound like them, i mean have that galvanizing impact.
Oh yes, Ball and Biscuit. But my favorite song from them has to be "Death Letter" from De Stijl (Their Best Album). But I think that song was originally done by a blues artist.
