Or any good drummer! I don't think any drummer thread would be comeplete without mentioning all the great drummers who, at one point or another, played with Spinal Tap. Let's take a look, shall we: John "Stumpy" Pepys (1964-1967) Died in a bizarre, unexplained gardening accident. Eric "Stumpy Joe" Childs (1967-1974) Choked on vomit of unknown origin. Peter "James" Bond (1974-1977) Spontaneously combusted onstage. Mick Shrimpton (1977-1982) Onstage explosion Joe "Mama" Besser (1982) Quit the band, claiming he "couldn't take this 4/4 ****"; according to an MTV interview with Spinal Tap in November 1991, he disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Gary Wallis, Jody Linscott (Amnesty International performance in 1991) (Wallis pretended to explode at the end of the performance.) Richard "Ric" Shrimpton (1982-1999) Allegedly sold his dialysis machine for drugs, presumed dead Sammy "Stumpy" Bateman (2000) Died in a freak tricycle accident jumping over a pool of sharks. Mick Fleetwood (2000) The only one to survive unscathed. Scott "Skippy" Scuffleton (2001-2007) His iPhone exploded in his hands while downloading "The best of Celine Dion". Plus 14 other drummers at various times all of whom are dead.
are there any good articles out there about drumming? would love to read em. as in drumming in general. ima or anyone else know of any? isnt there a drummers world magazine or something? that worth checking out?
Here is a quote from someone I found discussing the Buddy Rich Tribute...called "Burning for Buddy": "Neil Peart is very good but for all those guys that say he is the best ever, go find the dvd the Buddy Rich tribute concert called "Burning for Buddy". It's a bunch of drummers playing with the Buddy Rich Big Band, Peart gets absolutely owned by several drummers, so much so that it led him to start taking lessons again with famed teacher Freddie Gruber. While you can never call a clear cut winner to best ever the consensus from drummers\musicians is that Buddy Rich was to closest thing to perfection." Obviously, this was a while ago. Take any drummer and put them in a different genre their not used to...I'm sure there will be some transition problems. I'd like to see this video.
Sure there has...Phil Collins. Wait a minute, I am getting Phil confused with Peter Gabriel during their days in Genesis when PG would be singing in costume.
I've seen it. Neil is clearly out of his league, but who cares? Hats off to the guy for wanting to broaden his horizons and being humble enough to take lessons in order to do so, even though he's already one of the best ever at what he does. The great ones are great because they know they can always get better. BTW, even Buddy Rich had his critics. Few people will ever question his technique, but a lot of people say he didn't play with any emotion. Point being that everyone has their strong points and weak points. I also don't think music is about "owning" other musicians.
I like Cavalera as well. This guy is pretty bad ass too. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pJZbuFv3YvE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pJZbuFv3YvE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I agree with the comments concerning "best". But some of the people I have seen live that have blown me away are: Barry "Frosty" Smith - if you know who he is you know he's a bonafide bad ass... Dan Gottlieb Antonio Sanchez Terry Bozzio <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EPAvBLcBoqM"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EPAvBLcBoqM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/efERFCN0B_0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/efERFCN0B_0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BWabRD0c_VQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BWabRD0c_VQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
guilty of above offense.... urrrrrgh and I HATE that big pet peeve of mine, not paying attention to the specifics of the thread topic Back on point, the drummer for Mudvayne I always thought was entertaining. Kicks major tail on the pedals, Double Bass! <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sU_fgzvg5Lo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sU_fgzvg5Lo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
