You and me both. Deep dish sux donkey balls. My favorite NY pizza places in Houston: Romano's (West Gray), Manhattan (Wilcrest & Briar Forest) I also like European style pizza...easy on the sauce and cheese and heavier on the toppings. My favorite places for that are Dolce Vita (Lower Westheimer) and the Grotto (Westheimer & 610). The pizza is the only thing I will eat at the Grotto since "Fillbert Tortilla" bought the place...it's the only thing on the menu that hasn't been ruined.
Didnt we have a Pizza UNO here in Houston at one time or was I dreaming? I'm not a huge pie fan, but I did like Pizza UNO..
That place is great. One of my friends lives right by there, and that is our football food. I used to really like Frank's by Cabo downtown, but I haven't eaten there in awhile. When I get deep dish, it's usually a Starburst from Star.
Come and gone. There used to be a store Kirby @ Richmond. The last deep dish pizza I had was at BJ's in Clear Lake. I enjoyed it. BJ's also brews their own beer, which is good as well.
Great pizza and nice people. Looks like your average, run of the mill strip center pizza joint from the outside, but oh so much better. Great subs and italian dishes too. If they delivered to my house, I would weigh 1,000 pounds.
Mangia's is fantastic for deep dish. At the very least, it's the best you're going to get in Texas. Just as good as anything I've had in Chicago. In Houston, my favorite was always Greek Tony's (The Woodlands). More of a New York style, though.
I like that place too, except my gf banned it sometime last year... apparently one of the bus boys kept trying to talk to her and totally weirded her out. And it wasn't in one of those "are you done with that plate, miss?" kinda ways... I may have to go back secretly to get my pizza now.
I'll have to try those. My personal faves - and they may be chains but I don't care - are New York Pizzeria and Pepperonis.
I'm not a big deep dish fan. Some of my favorite pizza in Houston is actual Whole Foods pizza. It's just good, and they often have unique topping combinations. The other day there was this one with Thai barbecue sauce, fajita-like beef and some various cheeses.
deep dish is AMAZING, though, new york style is all right as well. If you check Kroger's sometimes has those frozen UNO's deep dishes that are pretty good, nothing compares to eating at the restaurant, however.
I live right down the street from Manhattan Pizza but still haven't tried it. I've heard its great. The bad thing is everytime I feel like ordering a pizza it happens to be on Sunday, and they are closed on Sundays which completely blows my mind. I'd think Sunday would be their most profitable day during football season.
OT: The best pizza and lasagna in the world is served at Collina's on Richmond @ Kirkwood. Seriously. Their lasagna is to die for.
I'll put in another post for Star Pizza. It's the closest approximation I've had here, at least since UNO's closed. I haven't tried Barry's though, but if it is the same Barry's that used to have a restaurant near The Woodlands Mall, then it wasn't as good as Star. I love deep dish... I've even had it delivered in dry ice to me here from Chicago. I think I tried Lou Malnati's the last time. Definitely not the same as being in Chicago, but maybe it's my oven? Worth a try I guess if you're as desperate for deep dish as I can get sometimes. They'll also let you order a cheesecake, too. http://www.tastesofchicago.com/category/1
I never knew they were closed on Sundays. Weird. Oh well....maybe do a Saturday for college football. You will not be disappointed with their pizza.
