Off the top of my head, Rap got started in the 70's... See Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, etc. Van Halen's two best albums were done in the 1970's. Def Leppard started in the 1970's (I know because I saw a Nugent Concert where they opened). Foreigner's top 3 albums all came in the late 70's. Journey's first 5 albums were done in the 70's. Winwood got his start in the 1960's as part of The Spencer Davis Group. Starship was Airplane in the 1960's. Phil Collins was in Genesis during the 1970's. The Go-Gos formed in the late 70's. Toto's first two albums were in the 1970's.
Actually, Black Sabbath introduced us to Heavy Metal in the early 70's. No one really began to follow suit until the 80's, though.

Most of my favorite artists are 90's and 00's, so I voted 90's but there is stuff I like and dislike in every era. We are fortunate that all of our favorites from bygone decades are still available to us as well as all of the new stuff. Oh, and I feel compelled to insert my ubiquitous rant that music, like all art is completely subjective, so there is no objectively best decade for music, just whichever one has the most stuff you enjoy, or the stuff you enjoy the most.
Having your first album published in 1979 does not make you a 70's band. Sometimes the semantics on this board can be irritating.

'72 was really the year that saw the birth of heavy metal with the trinity albums - "Machine Head", "Led Zeppelin II", and "Paranoid". So, IMO, I would argue that Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Zeppelin all contributed to the birth of heavy metal music. EDIT - Zeppelin II came out in '69 and "Paranoid" came out in '71, so disregard '72 being the year. However, heavy metal music's genesis was still in the early '70s, maybe even the late '60s.
I like 80s punk/new wave and 70s funk. I like 70s reggae and country. I'm going to have to go with 70s overall with 80s a close 2nd.
All i can say is that 2000-2006 SUCKS, rap has ruined everything (Lil'Jon, Mike Jones). 80's Early 90's
My favorite decade is the 90s. Summer Song Giver gave pretty good evidence why. Some of my favorite bands like Zep and Floyd are from the 70s, but I'm a lot more familiar with 90s stuff and appreciate the decade as a whole better. I grew up in the 90s, so I gotta go with it. I know a lot of people aren't gonna like this, but I believe the 80s offered the least amount of music and doesn't really compare with any other decade - IN MY OPINION. There's little to like with most the trash out there they call music today. There's still some great bands around today but not many, so call me crazy but I've turned to mainstream for a lot of new music. I love the Lil Jons, and Mike Joneses, 50 Cents and all that kinda stuff. It's got good beats and is just cool stuff to listen to.
Alot of the 80s music was good, the fashion for the most part however was possibly the worst ever. Right up there with the white wigs and knee high stocking for dudes.
I didn't like 80's music when it occured, but looking back now it produced some great electronic hits. Most of the great electronica tinged rock that is out today has its roots back in the 80's
the 80s is the correct answer. apparently they must only be voting, and not posting, b/c the replies have been almost all 70s. and for one of the few times, i agree with FFB, the semantics involved in attaching stuff to the 70s and not the 80s is a little ridiculous. there's a difference in the very first to do something and "introducing to the world" as Baqui was mentioning. and trying to tie people like the go-gos (really?) and U2 to the 70s and not 80s when virtually everything anyone knows by them is from the 80s or later is silly. and Baqui's list didn't even have the biggest name people like madonna, michael jackson, prince, and U2. so much fun music from the 80s. good music from a lot of other decades, but nothing like the 80s for me.
75-85 the peak of new wave and punk. also, some of the best rock and disco. edit: by the way, i chose 80s...but i was really torn!
Have any Houston area 80's music fans been noticing The Point kinda sucking lately? They seem to be playing too much Hootie and the Blowfish and Matchbox 20 Lately. Plus, and this is just my personal taste, but they seem to play Journey every third song, and I'm not really the biggest Journey fan...
