Why not buy a memory foam mattress to put your memory foam topper on...

I wholeheartedly endorse memory foam. I know it's pricey, but shouldn't you splurge on something you spend 1/3 of your life on?

Here's a huge thread over at fatwallet on memory foam. Lots of cheapskates there so you might be able to glean a cheap alternative. link

Department stores like Dillard's often have surprisingly good selections of matresses. Nice furniture stores like Louis Shanks have matresses too. While you would think these places would automatically be the most expensive, you can often catch sales, special offers or coupons.

Well, you're not supposed to use box springs with memory foam. They suggest using a platform bed. That would definitely put you over budget though, unless you already have one. Cheapest one is 200 on overstock. You might be able to snag one on craigslist.

i have a bed frame and unfortunately i'm not in the market to buy another kind right now. would definitely like to get a memory foam mattress in the future.

this is just the first ad i could find off craiglist, but it shows the type of company i was referring to earlier...

You don't need box springs. You can just buy two pieces of plywood. Or build a platform for them.

That's actually a good idea. You can go to Lowe's and they'll cut it for you to fit right in your frame.

Just wanted to say that I did end up buying a queen mattress set from Mattress Pro Discounters in Kemah. His showroom was actually right there at the storage place. The mattress is great, no problems whatsoever, and the guy's brother delivered it and I just gave him like $40 for the trouble. He has all the Simmons BeautyRest stuff with the pocketed coils etc. Got a mattress with box springs and frame (queen) for about $600.

I wonder why this Serta is so cheap and the Temperpedic is so expensive? Is the Temperpedic that much better??

My opinion is that Tempurpedic has cornered the market on memory foam. Buying another brand of memory foam mattress is always questioned with how it matches up to Tempurpedic ones. I liken it to Apple and Macbook products, you're paying for the name also.
