Kool Keith aka Doc Octagon aka Dr Doom. Ultramagnetic MC's is one of the most underrated of all time. Always under the radar.

Soundbombing II was a dope album. "Anyman" was one of my favorite tracks off it. wish i still had it. that and the Roots was all i listened to when i was in NYC for 2 weeks.

Dr. Octagon was cool too. used to love "Bare Witness" and "Blue Flowers."

    ahhhh.... the good ol' days.

I listened to Jin..."Oh No!" It sounds cool...like Eminem. lol....and his homepage is cool too. There are two Asian guys in Rockets and Astros retro jerseys. One guy has a Yao Ming jersey...or Vernon Maxwell. I like him!

ClockworkOrange and JamesC, I can tell from your taste in music we could get along. Where do yall hoop?
    Slick Rick
    Ghostface Killa

Also I should have added earlier that Black Thought of the Roots, Big L , and Method should be on the poll.

Ps one of the best hip hop albums of all time is "Only built for Cuban Linx"- Raekwon.

"Good Mourning" by Talib Kweli is one of the hottest songs I've heard in a long time...

Seriously, the only people on that list who won't end up as the punchline to some joke in 10 years and nothing more are Jay-Z, Dre, Snoop, Nas, and Eminem. There shouldn't even be a discussion about 50 Cent as the best Hip Hop artist outside of his fad clout. The guy is singlehandedly the crappiest live musical act I have ever heard in my life. Hip Hop involves a lot of studio work, but it shouldn't have to utilize as much as 50-Cent albums apparently do.

    Screw it, it does count.

    J-5
The Roots (I missed them twice in the last week. Late to the DMB show Saturday, then didn't even know they were in Vegas on Sunday. Dammit to hell)
    Outkast
    Nas

Good picks - throwing in Outkast and The Roots for an expanded, group-inclusive debate. So I just have to throw in the name Bone Thugs for the sake of it, even though nobody in here would agree with me that the album they have out now is better than most any hip-hop.

I'll give you Ghostface, though it wouldn't have been as popular, but Slick Rick? That's reaching.

I think Xzibit deserves more love in this thread
...mostly because I'm listening to "Paparazzi" at the moment...:)

Out of the one's you listed Mos Def. However, I generally don't like mainstream hip-hop anymore. And since De la Soul, Cypress Hill, and Public Enemy are kind of past their prime and A Tribe Called Quest is finished, my current favorite rappers/groups are:

Wu-Tang Clan and certain solo records
    anything Prince Paul produces
    anything Dan the "Automator" produces
    Kool Keith
Several rappers/groups on Definitive Jux Records (Cannibal Ox, El-P, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif)
Rappers/groups on Quannum Projects Records (Blackalicious)
    Jurassic 5
    The Coup
    Outkast
    The Roots
    Del tha Funky Homo Sapien
    Beastie Boys
    Mos Def
    MC Paul Barman
    Wyclef Jean
    Lauryn Hill
    Missy Eliot...to some degree

...I'm sure I left off a couple, but that's pretty much it for me as far as rap goes these days.

Favorite rapper of all time: Q-Tip

I work in the gym at North Harris College so thats where I play ball most of the time. There a $5 charge for visitors. Also, good call on Big L, one of the most underrated rappers of all time. "Ebonics" is one of the most lyrically creative songs ever written. I'm not gonna get started on Slick Rick except say that he needs a greatest hits album.
