i was just about to POST REPLY and throw out VH; i can't believe it took this long to merit a mention -- good call.
You guys are forgetting the best one of all......."You're No Good". Gotta love Ed & Dave's screams on that one.
So, did anyone else hear that Stairway to Heaven cover by Dolly Parton this morning on NPR. I think that's on my worse list now. here it is: http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/me/20020924.me.dolly3.ram
Man, I'm glad this topic came back up.. i just heard a old cover version of Muddy Water's " Just Want to Make Love To You" done by the Stones in the early days(late 60's)...what a great rendition! and I dont really like the Stones that much.. I'll also throw in the Foghat version of that song as well...I had forgotten that it was a cover.
Admittedly, I was half-asleep when I heard it, but I didn't think it sounded too bad. But I'm a fan of bluegrass music anyway, so I may be biased. Parton said that Robert Plant told her he liked her use of a choir and that he had considered doing the same thing on the original recording.
How can a bunch of Texans not mention Joe Ely? With all due respect to the Stones, Ely's cover of "Not Fade Away" is incredible and by far the best to these ears. You can hear it on the "Texas Special" version of the Live Shots album, but it was much greater live and in person when he had that great band in the early '80's. His copy of the Hank Williams tune "Honky Tonkin," also on Live Shots, is pretty damn good too.
Was Robert Earl Keen's "Road Goes on Forever" a Joe Ely cover? If so, than that's a quality cover. also.... Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Little Wing", which i like a lot more than Hendrix original. Bradley Nowell's (of Sublime fame) "Guava Jelly" by Bob Marley RATM "Microphone Fiend" originally by Rakim (i think)
