As long as you keep listening to Dylan songs, more power to ya;)

It was more like Salvador Dali adding to the Mona Lisa.

    Nice.

The thing about the Hendrix covers is that he worshipped Dylan, even though they couldn't have had more differing styles, and it shows. His Watchtower was so right that, ever since Hendrix started doing it, Dylan's version has been a cover of Jimi covering him.

I was being ridiculous saying no one should cover Dylan. If you look at the post where I said that, you'll see I included a White Stripes Dylan cover. What I don't like is when people try to pretty him up or fix his songs for him. What I should have said was worst covers: All Byrds, Peter Paul & Mary, Joan Baez or Dead covers of Dylan. And yes, Dylan liked all those covers. But he's shown in the past he doesn't always have particularly good taste. George Harrison's If Not For You is so heartfelt that it transcends my dislike of pretty Dylan covers.

Whoever mentioned Dylan's Delia gets a gold star from me. That's the best song on an amazing all-cover record.

Dylan's "Baby Blue", by The 13th Floor Elevators.

"Viva Las Vegas", by Shawn Colvin. From the movie "The Big Lebowski".

Great site, BobFinn*! You mentioned Bubble Puppy in a thread awhile back. Did you ever see them? If you did, you must have seen the Elevators. Good times, back then. :)

Hadn't been to that site, BobFinn*. Thanks for the link. I'll have to check it out next week. We're opening a play Thursday and I'm swamped.

I usually go to expectingrain.com, rec.music.dylan and pool.dylantree.com. It's a great year to be a Dylan fan. His autobiography (whatever that means), Chronicles, comes out some time this year, Bootleg Series V. 5 should be out by the end of next month and that CRAZY sounding movie Masked and Anonymous is in the can.

Yes, World Gone Wrong is amazing. Good As I Been To You is good too.

They were friends of some friends of mine, so to speak, and I "socialized" with them at some private parties they played at, and at Paleface Park. I also was friends with the younger sister of a lady who was the girlfriend of Danny Thomas (drummer of the Elevators) for awhile. He was a cool guy... the "socializing" was truly outstanding, if you know what I mean. ;)

    BJ,

Do you think Andy Partridge tried to "pretty up" or fix Dylan? I always thought the record companies tried to pretty up and fix Andy Partridge.

    "Dear God" noooo!

That reminds me . . . has anyone tried to "pretty up" and "fix" a Frank Zappa song. ohh . . . and what's up with Gerry Harrison turning the Violent Femmes into the Tom Tom Club.

I've got one for the Beatles covers,

Suzy and the Banshees doing "Dear Prudence."

HP: Haven't heard the Partridge cover. The thing about Dylan to me, and I know this is not at all a popular opinion, is that I like his singing and his sense of time as much or more than I like his songs. A lot of people say he's a great songwriter, or a poet, but they can't stand his voice. I love his voice. And I think the Byrds versions (and others) rob his songs of all their best qualities. If it's all about the poems, I'd just as soon read them. Another unpopular opinion: I'm not really that into Watchtower. I think it's fine, but I think there are better songs on John Wesley Harding. I could do without ever hearing Knocking On Heaven's Door, too. ESPECIALLY the cover versions.

BJ, thats exactly they way I feel about Dylan as well. His timing and his annunciation of words to make them fit his purpose is second to none. Also, his early guitar work, much of which was learned from Ramblin' Jack Elliott, who learned from Woody Guthrie, is fantastic as well.

That's what attracted me to XTCs first album, and why I feel Partridge is perfect for covering Dylan. You might not like the way he treats his voice almost like a persussion instrument (especially in the early years), but he is all about expression through unique cadence and annunciation of words and phrases.

No, you must be addressing me, and all I can say is that, no, I haven't, and I get your point, and what's more I agree with your point...

CCR "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

You should have heard what they did to this song when I was at a discotheque in Sicily (yep, I guess I can call it that) years ago. Gave it a heavy jammin dance beat. But I'd still like the song.

    Kelly Osbourne, "Papa Don't Preach."

    (comedic pause)

    Just kidding on that one.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now," Simply Red (don't ask me who did the original).
