Not really a concert, but I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Hole in the Wall club in Nacogdoches, TX in about 1977. Amazing. Otherwise in 1986, Neil Young and Crazy Horse's 3rd Best Garage Band tour with Sonic Youth as the opener at the Summit was killer. Feedback city.
Touch and Go 25th anniversary party in Chicago. Scratch Acid, The Ex, !!!, Big Black, Shellac, Man or Astro-Man, etc. Most bands I think are great live bands I've seen a bunch of times, so rather than pick which time, I'll just list the bands. The Jesus Lizard NoMeansNo Les Savy Fav Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 Sprawl KRS One Willie Nelson DJ Krush Butthole Surfers Ed Hall Crust The Dicks
There are so many, but one sticks out...Ben Harper @ The Satellite Lounge in 1995. It was him, 12 guitars and his bongo player. There couldn't have been more than 50 people there. Total contrast to the last time I saw him...headlining ACL a few years ago.
I've been to so many concerts over the years that it's a tough question. I would still have to say my first concert is my most memorable albeit maybe not the best. But, it was pretty damn good for the time (early 80s). It was: Triumph / Foghat @ The Sam Houston Coliseum - Never Surrender tour (1983 I believe). What really stood out was Triumph's light show. They had this rectangular rack of over 5,000 individual lights over the stage and the light combination/color changed with each individual note. It was mind blowing. I've still never seen a light display that matches up to that spectacle in all the years afterwards. It was amazing. It's a good thing Triumph(primarily, Rik Emmitt) has finally seen the light and appears to be reuniting for a world tour...us fans hope...in 2009. They are playing some show in June in Europe for the first show back together again in many years. We will see how it unfolds. They always put on a good show. My favorite show would probably be Rush: R30 (30th anniversary tour) . First show I was ever front row. That made it a rather enjoyable experience.
I've been to some amazing concerts. I can't choose. These were all AMAZING concerts. 1981 - Journey @ The Summit (my first concert!) 1983 - Rush @ The Summit (Signals tour) 1987 - Pink Floyd @ The Astrodome in (Delicate Sound of Thunder tour) 1989 - The Cult @ The Summit (Sonic Temple tour) 1992 - Lollapalooza (with Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Ministry, Ice Cube, etc.) 1994 - The Eagles @ Rice Stadium (Hell Freezes Over tour) 1994 - Nine Inch Nails @ The Summit (Downward Spiral tour) 1995 - Nine Inch Nails @ Numbers (Downward Spiral/Dissonance tour) 2008 - Roger Waters @ the Pavilion (Dark Side of the Moon Live)
i don't know if your in Houston, but Maiden will be in town on May 22nd. they'll be playing what they're calling the Somewhere Back in Time Tour. it's gonna feature songs from '80-'89.
2 memorable ones- U2 Summit '85 Melissa Etheridge Opera House '89 She looked like she was in a trance for the whole show.
1) High School Musical (2006) 2) Mariah Carey (2006) I will be adding the Cure to the list soon. Hopefully Nine Inch Nails Maybe the Police also. Linkin Park also.
DJ set by LTJ Bukem in my junior year of college. I've been to a wide variety of concerts (from Outkast, to The Roots, to Smashing Pumpkins, to Wilco, to the Toasters, etc) but this was the most insane night of them all. I know it's just a DJ, but that night was an experience like no other. If there was one night and one place where everyone was united, that was it. From a purely aesthetic point of view - Flaming Lips. They put on a SHOW.
Well, it's all a bit hazy, but... First was The Cars, at the Colosseum in 1978 during their first headline tour, so that was cool. A few weeks later same place for Van Halen... 4th row center. Awesome. Caught SRV at the Steamboat 1865 club in Austin one night... amazing. The concert that most exceeded expectations was... Fleetwood Mac. Didn't know much about them, but Buckingham and Fleetwood rocked hard that night. The best song was "Oh Well." Most surprising was Joe Ely when he had Jesse Taylor on lead and Ponty Bone on accordion. I was hooked from the first song and I've seen more concerts by Joe Ely than anyone else. Worst was ELO... a 25 minute medley and a one song encore. Ugh.
some good ones include Pink Floyd 1994 Rice Stadium. Page/Plant, 95 at Compaq and '99 at Alamodome. Beastie Boys, 2004, Madison Square Garden Radiohead, 2001, Madison Square Garden Rage Against the Machine, 1997, Southpark Meadows lots of music festivals with lots of good bands
Was that when Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath? If so, I was there and both groups rocked, though I was there for Sabbath.
You are my new best friend. I was on the verge of going to that Touch and Go 25th Anniversary show! I had plans on where to stay and everything. But noooo, stupid had to happen and I had to cancel the whole damn thing. I was pretty pissed. Devo, Flaming Lips, TFUL 282?? I'd kill to see those bands. Some of my favorites: Shellac (in Austin and Houston) Stereolab at La Zona Rosa Battles & Prefuse 73 (Austin) at the Parish Don Caballero at the Proletariat (Houston) Lightning Bolt at Notsuohs (Houston) Mice Parade at the Parish (Austin) Sonic Youth (first time) Oxes/Man or Astroman/Trans Aa at Walters and countless others. Man, I'd kill to see the Flaming Lips.
They are pretty damn amazing live. I saw them @ ACL 2 years ago. The only bad thing was that it was during daylight. I think it would have been more amazing at sunset or at night.
ooh, I forgot Sufjan. Did you see him in Austin in 2006? During ACL Festival time. He was playing at Paramount Theatre. I got to see him on back to back nights. It was fantastic.
