I go to that NW Hoover's almost every week. It used to be a Shoney's. Last night got me my favs: a CFS w/ jalapeno creamed spinach, green beans, and Jamaican Jerk Ribs w/ BBQ (Cowboy) beans and potato salad. I was hungry. When they have burger specials, try the Green Chile Poblano burger too. But yeah, their CFS is right up there with the very best.
I guess I went too early because I was the only person in there until right before I left. People were slowly starting to come in. I'm still partial to Dots, but it was nice.
Reading the chicken thread I ran into this one. Had to bump. Melbas Country Kitchen 10840 Beaumont Hwy, Houston, TX 77078 7136708660 The best chicken fried steak I have ever had. Just a hole in the wall cafe but excellant food. They close at 6 pm.
If this is the one I am thinking of that has an attached section that sells trucking gear, then everything is awesome but the CFS especially. Dessert is good too.
A couple of years ago, I went on a CFS trek around North Texas. I tried to limit it to mom & pop places, but I hit 1 or 2 chains probably. I probably hit about 15 different places in 2 states. My favorite up here was Babe's Chicken. If you want to kill yourself, try Mary's in Strawn, Tx. They pan fry their CFS and have one that's big enough to make you think twice about eating it (I posted a pic of it here a while back). Down the freeway from Mary's, I went to a ghost town (a real one) where the population apparently is 5 and had CFS. CFS wasn't good, but the place was.... interesting.
I would imagine there are some pretty good ones in Vienna and Germany, where the dish originated (as Wiener Schnitzel) though the traditional version is made with a veal escalope instead of tenderized cubed steak.
I think every culture has their fried "things" that are similar to other fried "things". I had no idea what milanesa was until I went into a small mexican restaurant and they described it. I said "that sounds like chicken fried steak". Then they added "would you like that on a bed of spaghetti?" I was like, "wth?" Tasted awesome.
Instead of calling the thread "best" CFS, we should call it "most specialest" CFS. I've had a chicken fried steak you've never heard of and it will blow your mind! PFFFT I didn't know there were Chicken Friend Steak hipsters. Don't act like if you ate a CFS at Chili's you'd spit it out and throw up. Most people get their start on CFS in grade school. I always used to get the CFS styro platter with mashed taters and a roll. Everything after that is going to be gravy. As a fat youngster, I did a lot of CFS at Kelly's and later in college Threadgills. Never met a CFS I didn't like though.
Lola n 11th and Yale. The potatoes that come with it are insane!! The CFS itself is big. Do yourself a favor and get a side of sourdough toast with it.
lol! I agree with most of what you said. I actually had some pretty good CFS at Blackeyed Pea a couple of times. But I have to disagree with you one one thing : I've had some nasty CFS. Where you knew it was just some Walmart frozen CFS where you can't break the batter off... you can only scrape it off because it's become one with the meat. That's just nasty middle school cafeteria CFS.
I've sent one back it was so bad. Tough steak covered in gravy that was wayyyyy too salty. Like they were using extra salt to mask the crappyness. The only restaurant I have to eat at every time I go home to Houston is Pappy's on I-10 at Cambell. Best in Texas IMO. I'm still searching for the best CFS in Austin and I'm open to suggestions.
